99. Amnon's
Crime.
2 Samuel
13:1-22.
1
It happened
after this, that
Absalom the son
of David had a
beautiful
sister, whose
name was Tamar;
and Amnon the
son of David
loved her.
2
Amnon was so
troubled that he
fell sick
because of his
sister Tamar;
for she was a
virgin; and it
seemed hard to
Amnon to do
anything to her.
3
But Amnon had a
friend, whose
name was Jonadab,
the son of
Shimeah, David’s
brother; and
Jonadab was a
very subtle man.
4
He said to him,
“Why, son of the
king, are you so
sad from day to
day? Won’t you
tell me?”
Amnon said to
him, “I love
Tamar, my
brother
Absalom’s
sister.”
5
Jonadab said to
him, “Lay down
on your bed, and
pretend to be
sick. When your
father comes to
see you, tell
him, ‘Please let
my sister Tamar
come and give me
bread to eat,
and dress the
food in my
sight, that I
may see it, and
eat it from her
hand.’”
6
So Amnon lay
down and faked
being sick. When
the king came to
see him, Amnon
said to the
king, “Please
let my sister
Tamar come, and
make me a couple
of cakes in my
sight, that I
may eat from her
hand.”
7
Then David sent
home to Tamar,
saying, “Go now
to your brother
Amnon’s house,
and prepare food
for him.”
8
So Tamar went to
her brother
Amnon’s house;
and he was laid
down. She took
dough, and
kneaded it, and
made cakes in
his sight, and
baked the cakes.
9
She took the
pan, and poured
them out before
him; but he
refused to eat.
Amnon said,
“Have all men
leave me.” Every
man went out
from him.
10
Amnon said to
Tamar, “Bring
the food into
the room, that I
may eat from
your hand.”
Tamar took the
cakes which she
had made, and
brought them
into the room to
Amnon her
brother.
11
When she had
brought them
near to him to
eat, he took
hold of her, and
said to her,
“Come, lie with
me, my sister!”
12
She answered
him, “No, my
brother, do not
force me! For no
such thing ought
to be done in
Israel. Don’t
you do this
folly.
13
I, where would I
carry my shame?
And as for you,
you will be as
one of the fools
in Israel. Now
therefore,
please speak to
the king; for he
will not
withhold me from
you.”
14
However he would
not listen to
her voice; but
being stronger
than she, he
forced her, and
lay with her.
15
Then Amnon hated
her with
exceeding great
hatred; for the
hatred with
which he hated
her was greater
than the love
with which he
had loved her.
Amnon said to
her, “Arise, be
gone!”
16
She said to him,
“Not so, because
this great wrong
in sending me
away is worse
than the other
that you did to
me!”
But he would not
listen to her.
17
Then he called
his servant who
ministered to
him, and said,
“Put now this
woman out from
me, and bolt the
door after her.”
18
She had a
garment of
various colors
on her; for with
such robes were
the king’s
daughters who
were virgins
dressed. Then
his servant
brought her out,
and bolted the
door after her.
19
Tamar put ashes
on her head, and
tore her garment
of various
colors that was
on her; and she
laid her hand on
her head, and
went her way,
crying aloud as
she went.
20
Absalom her
brother said to
her, “Has Amnon
your brother
been with you?
But now hold
your peace, my
sister. He is
your brother.
Don’t take this
thing to heart.”
So Tamar
remained
desolate in her
brother
Absalom’s house.
21
But when king
David heard of
all these
things, he was
very angry.
22
Absalom spoke to
Amnon neither
good nor bad;
for Absalom
hated Amnon,
because he had
forced his
sister Tamar.

100. Absalom's
Vengeance.
2 Samuel
13:23-36.
23
It happened
after two full
years, that
Absalom had
sheepshearers in
Baal Hazor,
which is beside
Ephraim: and
Absalom invited
all the king’s
sons.
24
Absalom came to
the king, and
said, “See now,
your servant has
sheepshearers.
Please let the
king and his
servants go with
your servant.”
25
The king said to
Absalom, “No, my
son, let us not
all go, lest we
be burdensome to
you.” He pressed
him; however he
would not go,
but blessed him.
26
Then Absalom
said, “If not,
please let my
brother Amnon go
with us.”
The king said to
him, “Why should
he go with you?”
27
But Absalom
pressed him, and
he let Amnon and
all the king’s
sons go with
him.
28
Absalom
commanded his
servants,
saying, “Mark
now, when
Amnon’s heart is
merry with wine;
and when I tell
you, ‘Strike
Amnon,’ then
kill him. Don’t
be afraid.
Haven’t I
commanded you?
Be courageous,
and be valiant!”
29
The servants of
Absalom did to
Amnon as Absalom
had commanded.
Then all the
king’s sons
arose, and every
man got up on
his mule, and
fled.
30
It happened,
while they were
in the way, that
the news came to
David, saying,
“Absalom has
slain all the
king’s sons, and
there is not one
of them left!”
31
Then the king
arose, and tore
his garments,
and lay on the
earth; and all
his servants
stood by with
their clothes
torn.
32
Jonadab, the son
of Shimeah,
David’s brother,
answered, “Don’t
let my lord
suppose that
they have killed
all the young
men the king’s
sons; for Amnon
only is dead;
for by the
appointment of
Absalom this has
been determined
from the day
that he forced
his sister
Tamar.
33
Now therefore
don’t let my
lord the king
take the thing
to his heart, to
think that all
the king’s sons
are dead; for
Amnon only is
dead.”
34
But Absalom
fled. The young
man who kept the
watch lifted up
his eyes, and
looked, and
behold, many
people were
coming by way of
the hillside
behind him.
35
Jonadab said to
the king,
“Behold, the
king’s sons are
coming! It is as
your servant
said.”
36
It happened, as
soon as he had
finished
speaking, that
behold, the
king’s sons
came, and lifted
up their voice,
and wept. The
king also and
all his servants
wept bitterly. |

101. Absalom's
Flight and
Sojourn in
Geshur.
2 Samuel
13:37-39.
37
But Absalom
fled, and went
to Talmai the
son of Ammihur,
king of Geshur.
David mourned
for his son
every day.
38
So Absalom fled,
and went to
Geshur, and was
there three
years.
39
King David
longed to go
forth to
Absalom: for he
was comforted
concerning Amnon,
since he was
dead.

102. The Recall
of Absalom.
(1) Joab's
Stratagem.
2 Samuel
14:1-20.
1
Now Joab the son
of Zeruiah
perceived that
the king’s heart
was toward
Absalom.
2
Joab sent to
Tekoa, and
fetched there a
wise woman, and
said to her,
“Please act like
a mourner, and
put on mourning
clothing,
please, and
don’t anoint
yourself with
oil, but be as a
woman who has
mourned a long
time for the
dead.
3
Go in to the
king, and speak
like this to
him.” So Joab
put the words in
her mouth.
4
When the woman
of Tekoa spoke
to the king, she
fell on her face
to the ground,
showed respect,
and said, “Help,
O king!”
5
The king said to
her, “What ails
you?”
She answered,
“Truly I am a
widow, and my
husband is dead.
6
Your handmaid
had two sons,
and they both
fought together
in the field,
and there was no
one to part
them, but the
one struck the
other, and
killed him.
7
Behold, the
whole family has
risen against
your handmaid,
and they say,
‘Deliver him who
struck his
brother, that we
may kill him for
the life of his
brother whom he
killed, and so
destroy the heir
also.’ Thus they
would quench my
coal which is
left, and would
leave to my
husband neither
name nor
remainder on the
surface of the
earth.”
8
The king said to
the woman, “Go
to your house,
and I will give
a command
concerning you.”
9
The woman of
Tekoa said to
the king, “My
lord, O king,
the iniquity be
on me, and on my
father’s house;
and the king and
his throne be
guiltless.”
10
The king said,
“Whoever says
anything to you,
bring him to me,
and he shall not
touch you any
more.”
11
Then she said,
“Please let the
king remember
Yahweh your God,
that the avenger
of blood destroy
not any more,
lest they
destroy my son.”
He said, “As
Yahweh lives,
not one hair of
your son shall
fall to the
earth.”
12
Then the woman
said, “Please
let your
handmaid speak a
word to my lord
the king.”
He said, “Say
on.”
13
The woman said,
“Why then have
you devised such
a thing against
the people of
God? For in
speaking this
word the king is
as one who is
guilty, in that
the king does
not bring home
again his
banished one.
14
For we must die,
and are as water
split on the
ground, which
can’t be
gathered up
again; neither
does God take
away life, but
devises means,
that he who is
banished not be
an outcast from
him.
15
Now therefore
seeing that I
have come to
speak this word
to my lord the
king, it is
because the
people have made
me afraid: and
your handmaid
said, ‘I will
now speak to the
king; it may be
that the king
will perform the
request of his
servant.’
16
For the king
will hear, to
deliver his
servant out of
the hand of the
man who would
destroy me and
my son together
out of the
inheritance of
God.
17
Then your
handmaid said,
‘Please let the
word of my lord
the king bring
rest; for as an
angel of God, so
is my lord the
king to discern
good and bad.
May Yahweh, your
God, be with
you.’”
18
Then the king
answered the
woman, “Please
don’t hide
anything from me
that I ask you.”
The woman said,
“Let my lord the
king now speak.”
19
The king said,
“Is the hand of
Joab with you in
all this?”
The woman
answered, “As
your soul lives,
my lord the
king, no one can
turn to the
right hand or to
the left from
anything that my
lord the king
has spoken; for
your servant
Joab, he urged
me, and he put
all these words
in the mouth of
your handmaid;
20
to change the
face of the
matter has your
servant Joab
done this thing.
My lord is wise,
according to the
wisdom of an
angel of God, to
know all things
that are in the
earth.”

(2) Absalom's
Return.
2 Samuel
14:21-24.
21
The king said to
Joab, “Behold
now, I have done
this thing. Go
therefore, bring
the young man
Absalom back.”
22
Joab fell to the
ground on his
face, showed
respect, and
blessed the
king. Joab said,
“Today your
servant knows
that I have
found favor in
your sight, my
lord, king, in
that the king
has performed
the request of
his servant.”
23
So Joab arose
and went to
Geshur, and
brought Absalom
to Jerusalem.
24
The king said,
“Let him return
to his own
house, but let
him not see my
face.” So
Absalom returned
to his own
house, and
didn’t see the
king’s face.

(3) Absalom
and his Family,
2 Samuel
14:25-27.
25
Now in all
Israel there was
none to be so
much praised as
Absalom for his
beauty: from the
sole of his foot
even to the
crown of his
head there was
no blemish in
him.
26
When he cut the
hair of his head
(now it was at
every year’s end
that he cut it;
because it was
heavy on him,
therefore he cut
it); he weighed
the hair of his
head at two
hundred shekels,
after the king’s
weight.
27
To Absalom there
were born three
sons, and one
daughter, whose
name was Tamar:
she was a woman
of a beautiful
face.
|
|
|
(4) Absalom's
Waiting in
Jerusalem.
2 Samuel
14:28.
28
Absalom lived
two full years
in Jerusalem;
and he didn’t
see the king’s
face. |
|
|
(5) Absalom's
Readmission to
Court.
2 Samuel
14:29-33.
29
Then Absalom
sent for Joab,
to send him to
the king; but he
would not come
to him: and he
sent again a
second time, but
he would not
come.
30
Therefore he
said to his
servants,
“Behold, Joab’s
field is near
mine, and he has
barley there. Go
and set it on
fire.” Absalom’s
servants set the
field on fire.
31
Then Joab arose,
and came to
Absalom to his
house, and said
to him, “Why
have your
servants set my
field on fire?”
32
Absalom answered
Joab, “Behold, I
sent to you,
saying, ‘Come
here, that I may
send you to the
king, to say,
“Why have I come
from Geshur? It
would be better
for me to be
there still. Now
therefore let me
see the king’s
face; and if
there is
iniquity in me,
let him kill
me.”’”
33
So Joab came to
the king, and
told him; and
when he had
called for
Absalom, he came
to the king, and
bowed himself on
his face to the
ground before
the king: and
the king kissed
Absalom.

103. Absalom
stealing the
Hearts of the
Men of Israel.
2 Samuel
15:1-6.
29
Then Absalom
sent for Joab,
to send him to
the king; but he
would not come
to him: and he
sent again a
second time, but
he would not
come.
30
Therefore he
said to his
servants,
“Behold, Joab’s
field is near
mine, and he has
barley there. Go
and set it on
fire.” Absalom’s
servants set the
field on fire.
31
Then Joab arose,
and came to
Absalom to his
house, and said
to him, “Why
have your
servants set my
field on fire?”
32
Absalom answered
Joab, “Behold, I
sent to you,
saying, ‘Come
here, that I may
send you to the
king, to say,
“Why have I come
from Geshur? It
would be better
for me to be
there still. Now
therefore let me
see the king’s
face; and if
there is
iniquity in me,
let him kill
me.”’”
33
So Joab came to
the king, and
told him; and
when he had
called for
Absalom, he came
to the king, and
bowed himself on
his face to the
ground before
the king: and
the king kissed
Absalom.

104. The three
Years' Famine.
(1) The
Execution of
Saul's
Grandsons.
2 Samuel
21:1-10.
1
There was a
famine in the
days of David
three years,
year after year;
and David sought
the face of
Yahweh. Yahweh
said, “It is for
Saul, and for
his bloody
house, because
he put to death
the Gibeonites.”
2
The king called
the Gibeonites,
and said to them
(now the
Gibeonites were
not of the
children of
Israel, but of
the remnant of
the Amorites;
and the children
of Israel had
sworn to them:
and Saul sought
to kill them in
his zeal for the
children of
Israel and
Judah);
3
and David said
to the
Gibeonites,
“What shall I do
for you? And
with what shall
I make
atonement, that
you may bless
the inheritance
of Yahweh?”
4
The Gibeonites
said to him, “It
is no matter of
silver or gold
between us and
Saul, or his
house; neither
is it for us to
put any man to
death in
Israel.”
He said,
“Whatever you
say, that will I
do for you.”
5
They said to the
king, “The man
who consumed us,
and who devised
against us, that
we should be
destroyed from
remaining in any
of the borders
of Israel,
6
let seven men of
his sons be
delivered to us,
and we will hang
them up to
Yahweh in Gibeah
of Saul, the
chosen of
Yahweh.”
The king said,
“I will give
them.”
7
But the king
spared
Mephibosheth,
the son of
Jonathan the son
of Saul, because
of Yahweh’s oath
that was between
them, between
David and
Jonathan the son
of Saul.
8
But the king
took the two
sons of Rizpah
the daughter of
Aiah, whom she
bore to Saul,
Armoni and
Mephibosheth;
and the five
sons of Michal
the daughter of
Saul, whom she
bore to Adriel
the son of
Barzillai the
Meholathite.
9
He delivered
them into the
hands of the
Gibeonites, and
they hanged them
in the mountain
before Yahweh,
and all seven of
them fell
together. They
were put to
death in the
days of harvest,
in the first
days, at the
beginning of
barley harvest.
10
Rizpah the
daughter of Aiah
took sackcloth,
and spread it
for her on the
rock, from the
beginning of
harvest until
water was poured
on them from the
sky. She allowed
neither the
birds of the sky
to rest on them
by day, nor the
animals of the
field by night.

|
(2) The
Burial of Saul
and his Sons.
2 Samuel
21:11-14.
11
It was told
David what
Rizpah the
daughter of Aiah,
the concubine of
Saul, had done.
12
David went and
took the bones
of Saul and the
bones of
Jonathan his son
from the men of
Jabesh Gilead,
who had stolen
them from the
street of Beth
Shan, where the
Philistines had
hanged them, in
the day that the
Philistines
killed Saul in
Gilboa;
13
and he brought
up from there
the bones of
Saul and the
bones of
Jonathan his
son: and they
gathered the
bones of those
who were hanged.
14
They buried the
bones of Saul
and Jonathan his
son in the
country of
Benjamin in Zela,
in the tomb of
Kish his father:
and they
performed all
that the king
commanded. After
that God was
entreated for
the land.

|
105. The three
Days'
Pestilence.
(1) David's Sin
in numbering the
People. |
2 Samuel 24:1-9.
1
Again the anger
of Yahweh was
kindled against
Israel, and he
moved David
against them,
saying, “Go,
number Israel
and Judah.”
2
The king said to
Joab the captain
of the army, who
was with him,
“Now go back and
forth through
all the tribes
of Israel, from
Dan even to
Beersheba, and
number the
people, that I
may know the sum
of the people.”
3
Joab said to the
king, “Now may
Yahweh your God
add to the
people, however
many they may
be, one hundred
times; and may
the eyes of my
lord the king
see it. But why
does my lord the
king delight in
this thing?”
4
Notwithstanding,
the king’s word
prevailed
against Joab,
and against the
captains of the
army. Joab and
the captains of
the army went
out from the
presence of the
king, to number
the people of
Israel.
5
They passed over
the Jordan, and
encamped in
Aroer, on the
right side of
the city that is
in the middle of
the valley of
Gad, and to
Jazer:
6
then they came
to Gilead, and
to the land of
Tahtim Hodshi;
and they came to
Dan Jaan, and
around to Sidon,
7
and came to the
stronghold of
Tyre, and to all
the cities of
the Hivites, and
of the
Canaanites; and
they went out to
the south of
Judah, at
Beersheba.
8
So when they had
gone back and
forth through
all the land,
they came to
Jerusalem at the
end of nine
months and
twenty days.
9
Joab gave up the
sum of the
numbering of the
people to the
king: and there
were in Israel
eight hundred
thousand valiant
men who drew the
sword; and the
men of Judah
were five
hundred thousand
men.
|
1 Chronicles
21:1-6.
1
Satan stood up
against Israel,
and moved David
to number
Israel.
2
David said to
Joab and to the
princes of the
people, “Go,
number Israel
from Beersheba
even to Dan; and
bring me word,
that I may know
the sum of
them.”
3
Joab said, “May
Yahweh make his
people a hundred
times as many as
they are. But,
my lord the
king, aren’t
they all my
lord’s servants?
Why does my lord
require this
thing? Why will
he be a cause of
guilt to
Israel?”
4
Nevertheless the
king’s word
prevailed
against Joab.
Therefore Joab
departed, and
went throughout
all Israel, and
came to
Jerusalem.
5
Joab gave up the
sum of the
numbering of the
people to David.
All those of
Israel were one
million one
hundred thousand
men who drew
sword: and in
Judah were four
hundred seventy
thousand men who
drew sword.
6
But he didn’t
count Levi and
Benjamin among
them; for the
king’s word was
abominable to
Joab.

|
(2) The
Choice of
Punishments. |
2 Samuel
24:10-14.
10
David’s heart
struck him after
that he had
numbered the
people. David
said to Yahweh,
“I have sinned
greatly in that
which I have
done. But now,
Yahweh, put
away, I beg you,
the iniquity of
your servant;
for I have done
very foolishly.”
11
When David rose
up in the
morning, the
word of Yahweh
came to the
prophet Gad,
David’s seer,
saying,
12
“Go and speak to
David, ‘Thus
says Yahweh, “I
offer you three
things. Choose
one of them,
that I may do it
to you.”’”
13
So Gad came to
David, and told
him, and said to
him, “Shall
seven years of
famine come to
you in your
land? Or will
you flee three
months before
your foes while
they pursue you?
Or shall there
be three days’
pestilence in
your land? Now
answer, and
consider what
answer I shall
return to him
who sent me.”
14
David said to
Gad, “I am in
distress. Let us
fall now into
the hand of
Yahweh; for his
mercies are
great. Let me
not fall into
the hand of
man.”
|
1 Chronicles
21:7-13.
7
God was
displeased with
this thing;
therefore he
struck Israel.
8
David said to
God, “I have
sinned greatly,
in that I have
done this thing.
But now, put
away, I beg you,
the iniquity of
your servant;
for I have done
very foolishly.”
9
Yahweh spoke to
Gad, David’s
seer, saying,
10
“Go and speak to
David, saying,
‘Thus says
Yahweh, “I offer
you three
things. Choose
one of them,
that I may do it
to you.”’”
11
So Gad came to
David, and said
to him, “Thus
says Yahweh,
‘Take your
choice:
12
either three
years of famine;
or three months
to be consumed
before your
foes, while the
sword of your
enemies
overtakes you;
or else three
days the sword
of Yahweh, even
pestilence in
the land, and
the angel of
Yahweh
destroying
throughout all
the borders of
Israel. Now
therefore
consider what
answer I shall
return to him
who sent me.’”
13
David said to
Gad, “I am in
distress. Let me
fall, I pray,
into the hand of
Yahweh; for his
mercies are very
great. Let me
not fall into
the hand of
man.”

(3) The
Pestilence. |
2 Samuel
24:15-17.
15
So Yahweh sent a
pestilence on
Israel from the
morning even to
the appointed
time; and there
died of the
people from Dan
even to
Beersheba
seventy thousand
men.
16
When the angel
stretched out
his hand toward
Jerusalem to
destroy it,
Yahweh relented
of the disaster,
and said to the
angel who
destroyed the
people, “It is
enough. Now stay
your hand.” The
angel of Yahweh
was by the
threshing floor
of Araunah the
Jebusite.
17
David spoke to
Yahweh when he
saw the angel
who struck the
people, and
said, “Behold, I
have sinned, and
I have done
perversely; but
these sheep,
what have they
done? Please let
your hand be
against me, and
against my
father’s house.”
|
1 Chronicles
21:14-17.
14
So Yahweh sent a
pestilence on
Israel; and
seventy thousand
men of Israel
fell.
15
God sent an
angel to
Jerusalem to
destroy it. As
he was about to
destroy, Yahweh
saw, and he
relented of the
disaster, and
said to the
destroying
angel, “It is
enough; now stay
your hand.” The
angel of Yahweh
was standing by
the threshing
floor of Ornan
the Jebusite.
16
David lifted up
his eyes, and
saw the angel of
Yahweh standing
between earth
and the sky,
having a drawn
sword in his
hand stretched
out over
Jerusalem.
Then David and
the elders,
clothed in
sackcloth, fell
on their faces.
17
David said to
God, “Isn’t it I
who commanded
the people to be
numbered? It is
even I who have
sinned and done
very wickedly;
but these sheep,
what have they
done? Please let
your hand, O
Yahweh my God,
be against me,
and against my
father’s house;
but not against
your people,
that they should
be plagued.”

(4)
David purchases
Araunah's
Threshing-floor
and erects an
Altar. |
2 Samuel
24:18-25.
18
Gad came that
day to David,
and said to him,
“Go up, build an
altar to Yahweh
on the threshing
floor of Araunah
the Jebusite.”
19
David went up
according to the
saying of Gad,
as Yahweh
commanded.
20
Araunah looked
out, and saw the
king and his
servants coming
on toward him.
Then Araunah
went out, and
bowed himself
before the king
with his face to
the ground.
21
Araunah said,
“Why has my lord
the king come to
his servant?”
David said, “To
buy your
threshing floor,
to build an
altar to Yahweh,
that the plague
may be stopped
from afflicting
the people.”
22
Araunah said to
David, “Let my
lord the king
take and offer
up what seems
good to him.
Behold, the
cattle for the
burnt offering,
and the
threshing
instruments and
the yokes of the
oxen for the
wood:
23
all this, king,
does Araunah
give to the
king.” Araunah
said to the
king, “May
Yahweh your God
accept you.”
24
The king said to
Araunah, “No;
but I will most
certainly buy it
from you for a
price. I will
not offer burnt
offerings to
Yahweh my God
which cost me
nothing.” So
David bought the
threshing floor
and the oxen for
fifty shekels of
silver.
25
David built an
altar to Yahweh
there, and
offered burnt
offerings and
peace offerings.
So Yahweh was
entreated for
the land, and
the plague was
stayed from
Israel.
|
1 Chronicles
21:18-30.
18
Then the angel
of Yahweh
commanded Gad to
tell David that
David should go
up, and raise an
altar to Yahweh
in the threshing
floor of Ornan
the Jebusite.
19
David went up at
the saying of
Gad, which he
spoke in the
name of Yahweh.
20
Ornan turned
back, and saw
the angel; and
his four sons
who were with
him hid
themselves. Now
Ornan was
threshing wheat.
21
As David came to
Ornan, Ornan
looked and saw
David, and went
out of the
threshing floor,
and bowed
himself to David
with his face to
the ground.
22
Then David said
to Ornan, “Give
me the place of
this threshing
floor, that I
may build
thereon an altar
to Yahweh. You
shall sell it to
me for the full
price, that the
plague may be
stopped from
afflicting the
people.”
23
Ornan said to
David, “Take it
for yourself,
and let my lord
the king do that
which is good in
his eyes.
Behold, I give
the oxen for
burnt offerings,
and the
threshing
instruments for
wood, and the
wheat for the
meal offering. I
give it all.”
24
King David said
to Ornan, “No;
but I will most
certainly buy it
for the full
price. For I
will not take
that which is
yours for
Yahweh, nor
offer a burnt
offering without
cost.”
25
So David gave to
Ornan six
hundred shekels
of gold by
weight for the
place.
26
David built an
altar to Yahweh
there, and
offered burnt
offerings and
peace offerings,
and called on
Yahweh; and he
answered him
from the sky by
fire on the
altar of burnt
offering.
27
Yahweh commanded
the angel; and
he put up his
sword again into
its sheath.
28
At that time,
when David saw
that Yahweh had
answered him in
the threshing
floor of Ornan
the Jebusite,
then he
sacrificed
there.
29
For the
tabernacle of
Yahweh, which
Moses made in
the wilderness,
and the altar of
burnt offering,
were at that
time in the high
place at Gibeon.
30
But David
couldn’t go
before it to
inquire of God;
for he was
afraid because
of the sword of
the angel of
Yahweh.

(2)
David's Plans
and Foresight.
1 Chronicles
22:2-5.
2
David gave
orders to gather
together the
foreigners who
were in the land
of Israel; and
he set masons to
cut worked
stones to build
the house of
God.
3
David prepared
iron in
abundance for
the nails for
the doors of the
gates, and for
the couplings;
and brass in
abundance
without weight;
4
and cedar trees
without number:
for the
Sidonians and
they of Tyre
brought cedar
trees in
abundance to
David.
5
David said,
“Solomon my son
is young and
tender, and the
house that is to
be built for
Yahweh must be
exceedingly
magnificent, of
fame and of
glory throughout
all countries. I
will therefore
make preparation
for it.” So
David prepared
abundantly
before his
death.

(3) David's
Charge to
Solomon.
1 Chronicles
22:6-16.
6
Then he called
for Solomon his
son, and
commanded him to
build a house
for Yahweh, the
God of Israel.
7
David said to
Solomon his son,
“As for me, it
was in my heart
to build a house
to the name of
Yahweh my God.
8
But the word of
Yahweh came to
me, saying, ‘You
have shed blood
abundantly, and
have made great
wars. You shall
not build a
house to my
name, because
you have shed
much blood on
the earth in my
sight.
9
Behold, a son
shall be born to
you, who shall
be a man of
rest. I will
give him rest
from all his
enemies all
around; for his
name shall be
Solomon, and I
will give peace
and quietness to
Israel in his
days.
10
He shall build a
house for my
name; and he
shall be my son,
and I will be
his father; and
I will establish
the throne of
his kingdom over
Israel for
ever.’
11
Now, my son, may
Yahweh be with
you and prosper
you, and build
the house of
Yahweh your God,
as he has spoken
concerning you.
12
May Yahweh give
you discretion
and
understanding,
and put you in
charge of
Israel; that so
you may keep the
law of Yahweh
your God.
13
Then you will
prosper, if you
observe to do
the statutes and
the ordinances
which Yahweh
gave Moses
concerning
Israel. Be
strong, and
courageous.
Don’t be afraid,
neither be
dismayed.
14
Now, behold, in
my affliction I
have prepared
for the house of
Yahweh one
hundred thousand
talents of gold,
one million
talents of
silver, and
brass and iron
without weight;
for it is in
abundance. I
have also
prepared timber
and stone; and
you may add to
them.
15
There are also
workmen with you
in abundance,
cutters and
workers of stone
and timber, and
all kinds of men
who are skillful
in every kind of
work:
16
of the gold, the
silver, and the
brass, and the
iron, there is
no number. Arise
and be doing,
and may Yahweh
be with you.”

(4)
David's Charge
to the Princes.
1 Chronicles
22:17-19
17
David also
commanded all
the princes of
Israel to help
Solomon his son,
saying,
18
“Isn’t Yahweh
your God with
you? Hasn’t he
given you rest
on every side?
For he has
delivered the
inhabitants of
the land into my
hand; and the
land is subdued
before Yahweh,
and before his
people.
19
Now set your
heart and your
soul to seek
after Yahweh
your God. Arise
therefore, and
build the
sanctuary of
Yahweh God, to
bring the ark of
the covenant of
Yahweh, and the
holy vessels of
God, into the
house that is to
be built to the
name of Yahweh.”

107. The
National
Convention.
(1) The
Convention
summoned.
1 Chronicles
23:1a, 2.
1a
Now David was
old and full of
days;....
2
He gathered
together all the
princes of
Israel, with the
priests and the
Levites. |
|
|
(2) Data
concerning the
Officials "
gathered."
A. The Number
and Distribution
of the Levites.
1
Chronicles
23:3-5.
3
The Levites were
numbered from
thirty years old
and upward: and
their number by
their polls, man
by man, was
thirty-eight
thousand.
4
David said, “Of
these,
twenty-four
thousand were to
oversee the work
of the house of
Yahweh; six
thousand were
officers and
judges;
5
four thousand
were
doorkeepers; and
four thousand
praised Yahweh
with the
instruments
which I made,
for giving
praise.”

B.
The twenty-four
Houses of the
Levites. |
1 Chronicles
23:6-23.
6
David divided
them into
divisions
according to the
sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kohath,
and Merari.
7
Of the
Gershonites:
Ladan and Shimei.
8
The sons of
Ladan: Jehiel
the chief, and
Zetham, and
Joel, three.
9
The sons of
Shimei:
Shelomoth, and
Haziel, and
Haran, three.
These were the
heads of the
fathers’
households of
Ladan.
10
The sons of
Shimei: Jahath,
Zina, and Jeush,
and Beriah.
These four were
the sons of
Shimei.
11
Jahath was the
chief, and Zizah
the second: but
Jeush and Beriah
didn’t have many
sons; therefore
they became a
fathers’ house
in one
reckoning.
12
The sons of
Kohath: Amram,
Izhar, Hebron,
and Uzziel,
four.
13
The sons of
Amram: Aaron and
Moses; and Aaron
was separated,
that he should
sanctify the
most holy
things, he and
his sons,
forever, to burn
incense before
Yahweh, to
minister to him,
and to bless in
his name,
forever.
14
But as for Moses
the man of God,
his sons were
named among the
tribe of Levi.
15
The sons of
Moses: Gershom
and Eliezer.
16
The sons of
Gershom: Shebuel
the chief.
17
The sons of
Eliezer were:
Rehabiah the
chief; and
Eliezer had no
other sons; but
the sons of
Rehabiah were
very many.
18
The sons of
Izhar: Shelomith
the chief.
19
The sons of
Hebron: Jeriah
the chief,
Amariah the
second, Jahaziel
the third, and
Jekameam the
fourth.
20
The sons of
Uzziel: Micah
the chief, and
Isshiah the
second.
21
The sons of
Merari: Mahli
and Mushi. The
sons of Mahli:
Eleazar and
Kish.
22
Eleazar died,
and had no sons,
but daughters
only: and their
brothers the
sons of Kish
took them as
wives.
23
The sons of
Mushi: Mahli,
and Eder, and
Jeremoth, three.
|
1 Chronicles
24:20-30a
20
Of the rest of
the sons of
Levi: of the
sons of Amram,
Shubael; of the
sons of Shubael,
Jehdeiah.
21
Of Rehabiah: of
the sons of
Rehabiah,
Isshiah the
chief.
22
Of the Izharites,
Shelomoth; of
the sons of
Shelomoth,
Jahath.
23
The sons of
Hebron: Jeriah,
Amariah the
second, Jahaziel
the third,
Jekameam the
fourth.
24
The sons of
Uzziel, Micah;
of the sons of
Micah, Shamir.
25
The brother of
Micah, Isshiah;
of the sons of
Isshiah,
Zechariah.
26
The sons of
Merari: Mahli
and Mushi; the
sons of Jaaziah:
Beno.
27
The sons of
Merari: of
Jaaziah, Beno,
and Shoham, and
Zaccur, and Ibri.
28
Of Mahli:
Eleazar, who had
no sons.
29
Of Kish; the
sons of Kish:
Jerahmeel.
30a
The sons of
Mushi: Mahli,
and Eder, and
Jerimoth.... |

C. The Duties of
the Levites. |
1 Chronicles
23:24-32.
23
The sons of
Mushi: Mahli,
and Eder, and
Jeremoth, three.
24
These were the
sons of Levi
after their
fathers’ houses,
even the heads
of the fathers’
houses of those
who were counted
individually, in
the number of
names by their
polls, who did
the work for the
service of the
house of Yahweh,
from twenty
years old and
upward.
25
For David said,
“Yahweh, the God
of Israel, has
given rest to
his people; and
he dwells in
Jerusalem
forever.
26
Also the Levites
will no longer
need to carry
the tabernacle
and all its
vessels for its
service.”
27
For by the last
words of David
the sons of Levi
were numbered,
from twenty
years old and
upward.
28
For their office
was to wait on
the sons of
Aaron for the
service of the
house of Yahweh,
in the courts,
and in the
rooms, and in
the purifying of
all holy things,
even the work of
the service of
the house of
God;
29
for the show
bread also, and
for the fine
flour for a meal
offering,
whether of
unleavened
wafers, or of
that which is
baked in the
pan, or of that
which is soaked,
and for all
kinds of measure
and size;
30
and to stand
every morning to
thank and praise
Yahweh, and
likewise in the
evening;
31
and to offer all
burnt offerings
to Yahweh, on
the Sabbaths, on
the new moons,
and on the set
feasts, in
number according
to the ordinance
concerning them,
continually
before Yahweh;
32
and that they
should keep the
duty of the Tent
of Meeting, and
the duty of the
holy place, and
the duty of the
sons of Aaron
their brothers,
for the service
of the house of
Yahweh.
|
1 Chronicles
24:30b, 31.
30.
...These were
the sons of the
Levites after
their fathers’
houses.
31
These likewise
cast lots even
as their
brothers the
sons of Aaron in
the presence of
David the king,
and Zadok, and
Ahimelech, and
the heads of the
fathers’
households of
the priests and
of the Levites;
the fathers’
households of
the chief even
as those of his
younger brother.

D. The
twenty-four
Courses of
Priests.
1
Chronicles
24:1-19.
1
These were the
divisions of the
sons of Aaron.
The sons of
Aaron: Nadab and
Abihu, Eleazar
and Ithamar.
2
But Nadab and
Abihu died
before their
father, and had
no children:
therefore
Eleazar and
Ithamar executed
the priest’s
office.
3
David with Zadok
of the sons of
Eleazar, and
Ahimelech of the
sons of Ithamar,
divided them
according to
their ordering
in their
service.
4
There were more
chief men found
of the sons of
Eleazar than of
the sons of
Ithamar; and
they were
divided like
this: of the
sons of Eleazar
there were
sixteen, heads
of fathers’
houses; and of
the sons of
Ithamar,
according to
their fathers’
houses, eight.
5
Thus were they
divided
impartially by
drawing lots;
for there were
princes of the
sanctuary, and
princes of God,
both of the sons
of Eleazar, and
of the sons of
Ithamar.
6
Shemaiah the son
of Nethanel the
scribe, who was
of the Levites,
wrote them in
the presence of
the king, and
the princes, and
Zadok the
priest, and
Ahimelech the
son of Abiathar,
and the heads of
the fathers’
households of
the priests and
of the Levites;
one fathers’
house being
taken for
Eleazar, and one
taken for
Ithamar.
7
Now the first
lot came forth
to Jehoiarib,
the second to
Jedaiah,
8
the third to
Harim, the
fourth to Seorim,
9
the fifth to
Malchijah, the
sixth to Mijamin,
10
the seventh to
Hakkoz, the
eighth to Abijah,
11
the ninth to
Jeshua, the
tenth to
Shecaniah,
12
the eleventh to
Eliashib, the
twelfth to Jakim,
13
the thirteenth
to Huppah, the
fourteenth to
Jeshebeab,
14
the fifteenth to
Bilgah, the
sixteenth to
Immer,
15
the seventeenth
to Hezir, the
eighteenth to
Happizzez,
16
the nineteenth
to Pethahiah,
the twentieth to
Jehezkel,
17
the twenty-first
to Jachin, the
twenty-second to
Gamul,
18
the twenty-third
to Delaiah, the
twenty-fourth to
Maaziah.
19
This was their
ordering in
their service,
to come into the
house of Yahweh
according to the
ordinance given
to them by Aaron
their father, as
Yahweh, the God
of Israel, had
commanded him.

E. The
twenty-four
Classes of
Singers.
1
Chronicles
25:1-31.
1
Moreover, David
and the captains
of the army set
apart for the
service certain
of the sons of
Asaph, and of
Heman, and of
Jeduthun, who
should prophesy
with harps, with
stringed
instruments, and
with cymbals:
and the number
of those who did
the work
according to
their service
was:
2
of the sons of
Asaph: Zaccur,
and Joseph, and
Nethaniah, and
Asharelah, the
sons of Asaph,
under the hand
of Asaph, who
prophesied after
the order of the
king.
3
Of Jeduthun; the
sons of Jeduthun:
Gedaliah, and
Zeri, and
Jeshaiah,
Hashabiah, and
Mattithiah, six,
under the hands
of their father
Jeduthun with
the harp, who
prophesied in
giving thanks
and praising
Yahweh.
4
Of Heman; the
sons of Heman:
Bukkiah,
Mattaniah,
Uzziel, Shebuel,
and Jerimoth,
Hananiah, Hanani,
Eliathah,
Giddalti, and
Romamti-Ezer,
Joshbekashah,
Mallothi, Hothir,
Mahazioth.
5
All these were
the sons of
Heman the king’s
seer in the
words of God, to
lift up the
horn. God gave
to Heman
fourteen sons
and three
daughters.
6
All these were
under the hands
of their father
for song in the
house of Yahweh,
with cymbals,
stringed
instruments, and
harps, for the
service of the
house of God;
Asaph, Jeduthun,
and Heman being
under the order
of the king.
7
The number of
them, with their
brothers who
were instructed
in singing to
Yahweh, even all
who were
skillful, was
two hundred
eighty-eight.
8
They cast lots
for their
offices, all
alike, as well
the small as the
great, the
teacher as the
scholar.
9
Now the first
lot came forth
for Asaph to
Joseph: the
second to
Gedaliah; he and
his brothers and
sons were
twelve:
10
the third to
Zaccur, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
11
the fourth to
Izri, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
12
the fifth to
Nethaniah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
13
the sixth to
Bukkiah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
14
the seventh to
Jesharelah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
15
the eighth to
Jeshaiah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
16
the ninth to
Mattaniah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
17
the tenth to
Shimei, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
18
the eleventh to
Azarel, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
19
the twelfth to
Hashabiah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
20
for the
thirteenth,
Shubael, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
21
for the
fourteenth,
Mattithiah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
22
for the
fifteenth to
Jeremoth, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
23
for the
sixteenth to
Hananiah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
24
for the
seventeenth to
Joshbekashah,
his sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
25
for the
eighteenth to
Hanani, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
26
for the
nineteenth to
Mallothi, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
27
for the
twentieth to
Eliathah, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
28
for the one and
twentieth to
Hothir, his sons
and his
brothers,
twelve:
29
for the two and
twentieth to
Giddalti, his
sons and his
brothers,
twelve:
30
for the three
and twentieth to
Mahazioth, his
sons and his

F. The Courses
of the
Doorkeepers.
1
Chronicles
26:1-19.
1
For the
divisions of the
doorkeepers: of
the Korahites,
Meshelemiah the
son of Kore, of
the sons of
Asaph.
2
Meshelemiah had
sons: Zechariah
the firstborn,
Jediael the
second, Zebadiah
the third,
Jathniel the
fourth,
3
Elam the fifth,
Jehohanan the
sixth,
Eliehoenai the
seventh.
4
Obed-Edom had
sons: Shemaiah
the firstborn,
Jehozabad the
second, Joah the
third, and Sacar
the fourth, and
Nethanel the
fifth,
5
Ammiel the
sixth, Issachar
the seventh,
Peullethai the
eighth; for God
blessed him.
6
Also to Shemaiah
his son were
sons born, who
ruled over the
house of their
father; for they
were mighty men
of valor.
7
The sons of
Shemaiah: Othni,
and Rephael, and
Obed, Elzabad,
whose brothers
were valiant
men, Elihu, and
Semachiah.
8
All these were
of the sons of
Obed-Edom: they
and their sons
and their
brothers, able
men in strength
for the service;
sixty-two of
Obed-Edom.
9
Meshelemiah had
sons and
brothers,
valiant men,
eighteen.
10
Also Hosah, of
the children of
Merari, had
sons: Shimri the
chief, (for
though he was
not the
firstborn, yet
his father made
him chief),
11
Hilkiah the
second, Tebaliah
the third,
Zechariah the
fourth: all the
sons and
brothers of
Hosah were
thirteen.
12
Of these were
the divisions of
the doorkeepers,
even of the
chief men,
having offices
like their
brothers, to
minister in the
house of Yahweh.
13
They cast lots,
the small as
well as the
great, according
to their
fathers’ houses,
for every gate.
14
The lot eastward
fell to
Shelemiah. Then
for Zechariah
his son, a wise
counselor, they
cast lots; and
his lot came out
northward.
15
To Obed-Edom
southward; and
to his sons the
storehouse.
16
To Shuppim and
Hosah westward,
by the gate of
Shallecheth, at
the causeway
that goes up,
watch against
watch.
17
Eastward were
six Levites,
northward four a
day, southward
four a day, and
for the
storehouse two
and two.
18
For Parbar
westward, four
at the causeway,
and two at
Parbar.
19
These were the
divisions of the
doorkeepers; of
the sons of the
Korahites, and
of the sons of
Merari. |

G. The Officers
of the
Treasuries of "
the House of
God."
1
Chronicles
26:20-28.
20
Of the Levites,
Ahijah was over
the treasures of
the house of
God, and over
the treasures of
the dedicated
things.
21
The sons of
Ladan, the sons
of the
Gershonites
belonging to
Ladan, the heads
of the fathers’
households
belonging to
Ladan the
Gershonite:
Jehieli.
22
The sons of
Jehieli: Zetham,
and Joel his
brother, over
the treasures of
the house of
Yahweh.
23
Of the Amramites,
of the Izharites,
of the
Hebronites, of
the Uzzielites:
24
and Shebuel the
son of Gershom,
the son of
Moses, was ruler
over the
treasures.
25
His brothers: of
Eliezer,
Rehabiah his
son, and
Jeshaiah his
son, and Joram
his son, and
Zichri his son,
and Shelomoth
his son.
26
This Shelomoth
and his brothers
were over all
the treasures of
the dedicated
things, which
David the king,
and the heads of
the fathers’
households, the
captains over
thousands and
hundreds, and
the captains of
the army, had
dedicated.
27
They dedicated
some of the
spoil won in
battles to
repair the house
of Yahweh.
28
All that Samuel
the seer, and
Saul the son of
Kish, and Abner
the son of Ner,
and Joab the son
of Zeruiah, had
dedicated,
whoever had
dedicated
anything, it was
under the hand
of Shelomoth,
and of his
brothers.

H.
The Officers and
Judges "for the
outward
Business."
1
Chronicles
26:29-32.
29
Of the Izharites,
Chenaniah and
his sons were
for the outward
business over
Israel, for
officers and
judges.
30
Of the
Hebronites,
Hashabiah and
his brothers,
men of valor,
one thousand
seven hundred,
had the
oversight of
Israel beyond
the Jordan
westward, for
all the business
of Yahweh, and
for the service
of the king.
31
Of the
Hebronites was
Jerijah the
chief, even of
the Hebronites,
according to
their
generations by
fathers’
households. In
the fortieth
year of the
reign of David
they were sought
for, and there
were found among
them mighty men
of valor at
Jazer of Gilead.
32
His brothers,
men of valor,
were two
thousand seven
hundred, heads
of fathers’
households, whom
king David made
overseers over
the Reubenites,
and the Gadites,
and the
half-tribe of
the Manassites,
for every matter
pertaining to
God, and for the
affairs of the
king.

I. The twelve
Captains of the
Army.
1
Chronicles
27:1-15.
1
Now the children
of Israel after
their number,
the heads of
fathers’
households and
the captains of
thousands and of
hundreds, and
their officers
who served the
king, in any
matter of the
divisions which
came in and went
out month by
month throughout
all the months
of the year—of
every division
were twenty-four
thousand.
2
Over the first
division for the
first month was
Jashobeam the
son of Zabdiel:
and in his

3
He was of the

Perez, the chief
of all the
captains of the
army for the

4
Over the
division of the

Dodai the
Ahohite, and his
division; and
Mikloth the
ruler: and in
his division
were twenty-four
thousand.
5
The third
captain of the
army for the
third month was
Benaiah, the son
of Jehoiada the
priest, chief:
and in his
division were
twenty-four
thousand.
6
This is that
Benaiah, who was
the mighty man
of the thirty,
and over the
thirty: and of
his division was
Ammizabad his
son.
7
The fourth
captain for the
fourth month was
Asahel the
brother of Joab,
and Zebadiah his
son after him:
and in his
division were
twenty-four
thousand.
8
The fifth
captain for this
fifth month was
Shamhuth the
Izrahite: and in
his division
were twenty-four
thousand.

Ikkesh the
Tekoite: and in
his division

the Zerahites:
and in his
division were
twenty-four
thousand.
12
The ninth
captain for the
ninth month was
Abiezer the
Anathothite, of
the Benjamites:
and in his
division were
twenty-four
thousand.
13
The tenth

tenth month was
Maharai the
Netophathite, of
the Zerahites:
and in his
division were
Twenty-four
thousand.
14
The eleventh

Pirathonite, of
the children of
Ephraim: and in
his division
were twenty-four
thousand.
15
The twelfth
captain for the
twelfth month
was Heldai the
Netophathite, of
Othniel: and in

J. The Chiefs of
the twelve
Tribes.
1
Chronicles
27:16-24.
16
Furthermore over
the tribes of
Israel: of the
Reubenites was
Eliezer the son
of Zichri the
ruler: of the
Simeonites,
Shephatiah the
son of Maacah:
17
of Levi,
Hashabiah the
son of Kemuel:
of Aaron, Zadok:
18
of Judah, Elihu,
one of the
brothers of
David: of
Issachar, Omri
the son of
Michael:
19
of Zebulun,
Ishmaiah the son
of Obadiah: of
Naphtali,
Jeremoth the son
of Azriel:
20
of the children
of Ephraim,
Hoshea the son
of Azaziah: of
the half-tribe
of Manasseh,
Joel the son of
Pedaiah:
21
of the
half-tribe of
Manasseh in
Gilead, Iddo the
son of
Zechariah: of
Benjamin,
Jaasiel the son
of Abner:
22
of Dan, Azarel
the son of
Jeroham. These
were the
captains of the
tribes of
Israel.
23
But David didn’t
take the number
of them from
twenty years old
and under,
because Yahweh
had said he
would increase
Israel like the
stars of the
sky.
24
Joab the son of
Zeruiah began to
number, but
didn’t finish;
and there came
wrath for this
on Israel;
neither was the
number put into
the account in
the chronicles
of king David. |

and over the
donkeys was
Jehdeiah the
Meronothite: and
over the flocks
was Jaziz the
Hagrite.
31
All these were
the rulers of
the substance
which was king
David’s.

32
Also Jonathan,
David’s uncle,
was a counselor,
a man of

and a scribe:
and Jehiel the
son of Hachmoni
was with the
king’s sons:
33
Ahithophel was
the king’s
counselor: and
Hushai the

the captains of
thousands, and
the captains of
hundreds, and
the rulers over
all the

[David] made
Solomon his son

B.
David's Address.
1
Chronicles
28:2-8.
2
Then David the
king stood up on
his feet, and
said, “Hear me,
my brothers, and
my people! As
for me, it was
in my heart to
build a house of
rest for the ark
of the covenant
of Yahweh, and
for the
footstool of our
God; and I had
prepared for the
building.
3
But God said to
me, ‘You shall
not build a
house for my
name, because
you are a man of
war, and have
shed blood.’
4
However Yahweh,
the God of
Israel, chose me
out of all the
house of my
father to be
king over Israel
forever. For he
has chosen Judah
to be prince;
and in the house
of Judah, the
house of my
father; and
among the sons
of my father he
took pleasure in
me to make me
king over all
Israel.
5
Of all my sons
(for Yahweh has
given me many
sons), he has
chosen Solomon
my son to sit on
the throne of
Yahweh’s kingdom
over Israel.
6
He said to me,
‘Solomon, your
son, shall build
my house and my
courts; for I
have chosen him
to be my son,
and I will be
his father.
7
I will establish
his kingdom
forever, if he
continues to do
my commandments
and my
ordinances, as
at this day.’
8
Now therefore,
in the sight of
all Israel, the
assembly of
Yahweh, and in
the audience of
our God, observe
and seek out all
the commandments
of Yahweh your
God; that you
may possess this
good land, and
leave it for an
inheritance to
your children
after you
forever.

C. David directs
Solomon
concerning the
Building of the
Temple.
1
Chronicles
28:9-21.
9
You, Solomon my
son, know the
God of your
father, and
serve him with a
perfect heart
and with a
willing mind;
for Yahweh
searches all
hearts, and
understands all
the imaginations
of the thoughts.
If you seek him,
he will be found
by you; but if
you forsake him,
he will cast you
off forever.
10
Take heed now;
for Yahweh has
chosen you to
build a house
for the
sanctuary. Be
strong, and do
it.”
11
Then David gave
to Solomon his
son the pattern
of the porch of
the temple, and
of its houses,
and of its
treasuries, and
of the upper
rooms of it, and
of the inner
rooms of it, and
of the place of
the mercy seat;
12
and the pattern
of all that he
had by the
Spirit, for the
courts of the
house of Yahweh,
and for all the
surrounding
rooms, for the
treasuries of
the house of
God, and for the
treasuries of
the dedicated
things;
13
also for the
divisions of the
priests and the
Levites, and for
all the work of
the service of
the house of
Yahweh, and for
all the vessels
of service in
the house of
Yahweh;
14
of gold by
weight for the
gold, for all
vessels of every
kind of service;
for all the
vessels of
silver by
weight, for all
vessels of every
kind of service;
15
by weight also
for the
lampstands of
gold, and for
its lamps, of
gold, by weight
for every
lampstand and
for its lamps;
and for the
lampstands of
silver, by
weight for every
lampstand and
for its lamps,
according to the
use of every
lampstand;
16
and the gold by
weight for the
tables of show
bread, for every
table; and
silver for the
tables of
silver;
17
and the forks,
and the basins,
and the cups, of
pure gold; and
for the golden
bowls by weight
for every bowl;
and for the
silver bowls by
weight for every
bowl;
18
and for the
altar of incense
refined gold by
weight; and gold
for the pattern
of the chariot,
the cherubim,
that spread out,
and covered the
ark of the
covenant of
Yahweh.
19
“All this,” said
David, “I have
been made to
understand in
writing from the
hand of Yahweh,
even all the
works of this
pattern.”
20
David said to
Solomon his son,
“Be strong and
courageous, and
do it. Don’t be
afraid, nor be
dismayed; for
Yahweh God, even
my God, is with
you. He will not
fail you, nor
forsake you,
until all the
work for the
service of the
house of Yahweh
is finished.
21
Behold, there
are the
divisions of the
priests and the
Levites, for all
the service of
the house of
God. There shall
be with you in
all kinds of
work every
willing man who
has skill, for
any kind of
service. Also
the captains and
all the people
will be entirely
at your
command.” |

D. Contributions
of David and the
Officials for
the Building of
the Temple.
1
Chronicles
29:1-9.
1
David the king
said to all the
assembly,
“Solomon my son,
whom alone God
has chosen, is
yet young and
tender, and the
work is great;
for the palace
is not for man,
but for Yahweh
God.
2
Now I have
prepared with
all my might for
the house of my
God the gold for
the things of
gold, and the
silver for the
things of
silver, and the
brass for the
things of brass,
the iron for the
things of iron,
and wood for the
things of wood;
onyx stones, and
stones to be
set, stones for
inlaid work, and
of various
colors, and all
kinds of
precious stones,
and marble
stones in
abundance.
3
In addition,
because I have
set my affection
on the house of
my God, since I
have a treasure
of my own of
gold and silver,
I give it to the
house of my God,
over and above
all that I have
prepared for the
holy house,
4
even three
thousand talents
of gold, of the
gold of Ophir,
and seven
thousand talents
of refined
silver, with
which to overlay
the walls of the
houses;
5
of gold for the
things of gold,
and of silver
for the things
of silver, and
for all kinds of
work to be made
by the hands of
artisans. Who
then offers
willingly to
consecrate
himself this day
to Yahweh?”
6
Then the princes
of the fathers’
households, and
the princes of
the tribes of
Israel, and the
captains of
thousands and of
hundreds, with
the rulers over
the king’s work,
offered
willingly;
7
and they gave
for the service
of the house of
God of gold five
thousand talents
and ten thousand
darics, and of
silver ten
thousand
talents, and of
brass eighteen
thousand
talents, and of
iron a hundred
thousand
talents.
8
They with whom
precious stones
were found gave
them to the
treasure of the
house of Yahweh,
under the hand
of Jehiel the
Gershonite.
9
Then the people
rejoiced,
because they
offered
willingly,
because with a
perfect heart
they offered
willingly to
Yahweh: and
David the king
also rejoiced
with great joy. |

E.
David's
Thanksgiving and
Prayer.
1
Chronicles
29:10-19.
10
Therefore David
blessed Yahweh
before all the
assembly; and
David said, “You
are blessed,
Yahweh, the God
of Israel our
father, forever
and ever.
11
Yours, Yahweh,
is the
greatness, the
power, the
glory, the
victory, and the
majesty! For all
that is in the
heavens and in
the earth is
yours. Yours is
the kingdom,
Yahweh, and you
are exalted as
head above all.
12
Both riches and
honor come from
you, and you
rule over all;
and in your hand
is power and
might; and it is
in your hand to
make great, and
to give strength
to all.
13
Now therefore,
our God, we
thank you, and
praise your
glorious name.
14
But who am I,
and what is my
people, that we
should be able
to offer so
willingly as
this? For all
things come from
you, and of your
own have we
given you.
15
For we are
strangers before
you, and
foreigners, as
all our fathers
were. Our days
on the earth are
as a shadow, and
there is no
remaining.
16
Yahweh our God,
all this store
that we have
prepared to
build you a
house for your
holy name comes
from your hand,
and is all your
own.
17
I know also, my
God, that you
try the heart,
and have
pleasure in
uprightness. As
for me, in the
uprightness of
my heart I have
willingly
offered all
these things.
Now have I seen
with joy your
people, that are
present here,
offer willingly
to you.
18
Yahweh, the God
of Abraham, of
Isaac, and of
Israel, our
fathers, keep
this forever in
the imagination
of the thoughts
of the heart of
your people, and
prepare their
heart for you;
19
and give to
Solomon my son a
perfect heart,
to keep your
commandments,
your
testimonies, and
your statutes,
and to do all
these things,
and to build the
palace, for
which I have
made provision.”

1 Chronicles
29:20-22a.

David said to
all the
assembly, “Now
bless Yahweh
your God!”
All the
assembly blessed
Yahweh, the God
of their
fathers, and
bowed down their
heads and
prostrated
themselves
before Yahweh
and the king.
21
They sacrificed
sacrifices to
Yahweh, and
offered burnt
offerings to
Yahweh, on the
next day after
that day, even
one thousand
bulls, one
thousand rams,
and one thousand
lambs, with
their drink
offerings, and
sacrifices in
abundance for
all Israel,
22a
and ate and
drink before
Yahweh on that
day with great
gladness.... |

108. The
Outbreak of the
Rebellion.
2 Samuel
15:7-12.
7
It happened at
the end of forty
years, that
Absalom said to
the king,
“Please let me
go and pay my
vow, which I
have vowed to
Yahweh, in
Hebron.
8
For your servant
vowed a vow
while I stayed
at Geshur in
Syria, saying,
‘If Yahweh shall
indeed bring me
again to
Jerusalem, then
I will serve
Yahweh.’”
9
The king said to
him, “Go in
peace.”
So he arose, and
went to Hebron.
10
But Absalom sent
spies throughout
all the tribes
of Israel,
saying, “As soon
as you hear the
sound of the
trumpet, then
you shall say,
‘Absalom is king
in Hebron!’”
11
Two hundred men
went with
Absalom out of
Jerusalem, who
were invited,
and went in
their
simplicity; and
they didn’t know
anything.
12
Absalom sent for
Ahithophel the
Gilonite,
David’s
counselor, from
his city, even
from Giloh,
while he was
offering the
sacrifices. The
conspiracy was
strong; for the
people increased
continually with
Absalom.

|
109. David's
Flight.
(1) He hastily
leaves
Jerusalem.
2 Samuel
15:13-18.
13
A messenger came
to David,
saying, “The
hearts of the
men of Israel
are after
Absalom.”
14
David said to
all his servants
who were with
him at
Jerusalem,
“Arise, and let
us flee; for
else none of us
shall escape
from Absalom.
Make speed to
depart, lest he
overtake us
quickly, and
bring down evil
on us, and
strike the city
with the edge of
the sword.”
15
The king’s
servants said to
the king,
“Behold, your
servants are
ready to do
whatever my lord
the king
chooses.”
16
The king went
forth, and all
his household
after him. The
king left ten
women, who were
concubines, to
keep the house.
17
The king went
forth, and all
the people after
him; and they
stayed in Beth
Merhak.
18
All his servants
passed on beside
him; and all the
Cherethites, and
all the
Pelethites, and
all the Gittites,
six hundred men
who came after
him from Gath,
passed on before
the king. |

(2) Ittai's
Fidelity.
2 Samuel
15:19-23.
19
Then the king
said to Ittai
the Gittite,
“Why do you also
go with us?
Return, and stay
with the king;
for you are a
foreigner, and
also an exile.
Return to your
own place.
20
Whereas you came
but yesterday,
should I this
day make you go
up and down with
us, since I go
where I may?
Return, and take
back your
brothers. Mercy
and truth be
with you.”
21
Ittai answered
the king, and
said, “As Yahweh
lives, and as my
lord the king
lives, surely in
what place my
lord the king
shall is,
whether for
death or for
life, even there
also will your
servant be.”
22
David said to
Ittai, “Go and
pass over.”
Ittai the
Gittite passed
over, and all
his men, and all
the little ones
who were with
him.
23
All the country
wept with a loud
voice, and all
the people
passed over: the
king also
himself passed
over the brook
Kidron, and all
the people
passed over,
toward the way
of the
wilderness.

(3) The
Priests and the
Ark.
2 Samuel
15:24-29.
24
Behold, Zadok
also came, and
all the Levites
with him,
bearing the ark
of the covenant
of God; and they
set down the ark
of God; and
Abiathar went
up, until all
the people
finished passing
out of the city.
25
The king said to
Zadok, “Carry
back the ark of
God into the
city. If I find
favor in the
eyes of Yahweh,
he will bring me
again, and show
me both it, and
his habitation;
26
but if he say
thus, ‘I have no
delight in you;’
behold, here am
I. Let him do to
me as seems good
to him.”
27
The king said
also to Zadok
the priest,
“Aren’t you a
seer? Return
into the city in
peace, and your
two sons with
you, Ahimaaz
your son, and
Jonathan the son
of Abiathar.
28
Behold, I will
stay at the
fords of the
wilderness,
until word comes
from you to
inform me.”
29
Zadok therefore
and Abiathar
carried the ark
of God again to
Jerusalem; and
they stayed
there. |

(4)
Hushai is sent
back to the
City.
2 Samuel
15:30-37a.
30
David went up by
the ascent of
the Mount of
Olives, and wept
as he went up;
and he had his
head covered,
and went
barefoot: and
all the people
who were with
him covered
every man his
head, and they
went up, weeping
as they went up.
31
Someone told
David, saying,
“Ahithophel is
among the
conspirators
with Absalom.”
David said,
“Yahweh, please
turn the counsel
of Ahithophel
into
foolishness.”
32
It happened that
when David had
come to the top,
where God was
worshiped,
behold, Hushai
the Archite came
to meet him with
his coat torn,
and earth on his
head.
33
David said to
him, “If you
pass on with me,
then you will be
a burden to me;
34
but if you
return to the
city, and tell
Absalom, ‘I will
be your servant,
O king. As I
have been your
father’s servant
in time past, so
will I now be
your servant;
then will you
defeat for me
the counsel of
Ahithophel.’
35
Don’t you have
Zadok and
Abiathar the
priests there
with you?
Therefore it
shall be, that
whatever thing
you shall hear
out of the
king’s house,
you shall tell
it to Zadok and
Abiathar the
priests.
36
Behold, they
have there with
them their two
sons, Ahimaaz,
Zadok’s son, and
Jonathan,
Abiathar’s son;
and by them you
shall send to me
everything that
you shall hear.”
37a
So Hushai,
David’s friend,
came into the
city;... |

(5) The
lying Ziba and
his Present
2 Samuel
16:1-4.
1
When David was a
little past the
top, behold,
Ziba the servant
of Mephibosheth
met him, with a
couple of
donkeys saddled,
and on them two
hundred loaves
of bread, and
one hundred
clusters of
raisins, and one
hundred summer
fruits, and a
bottle of wine.
2
The king said to
Ziba, What do
you mean by
these? Ziba
said, The
donkeys are for
the king’s
household to
ride on; and the
bread and summer
fruit for the
young men to
eat; and the
wine, that such
as are faint in
the wilderness
may drink.
3
The king said,
“Where is your
master’s son?”
Ziba said to the
king, “Behold,
he is staying in
Jerusalem; for
he said, ‘Today
the house of
Israel will
restore me the
kingdom of my
father.’”
4
Then the king
said to Ziba,
“Behold, all
that pertains to
Mephibosheth is
yours.”
Ziba said, “I do
obeisance. Let
me find favor in
your sight, my
lord, O king.”

(6) The
Cursing of
Shimei.
2 Samuel
16:5-14.
5
When king David
came to Bahurim,
behold, a man of
the family of
the house of
Saul came out,
whose name was
Shimei, the son
of Gera. He came
out, and cursed
still as he
came.
6
He cast stones
at David, and at
all the servants
of king David,
and all the
people and all
the mighty men
were on his
right hand and
on his left.
7
Shimei said when
he cursed, “Be
gone, be gone,
you man of
blood, and base
fellow!
8
Yahweh has
returned on you
all the blood of
the house of
Saul, in whose
place you have
reigned! Yahweh
has delivered
the kingdom into
the hand of
Absalom your
son! Behold, you
are caught by
your own
mischief,
because you are
a man of blood!”
9
Then Abishai the
son of Zeruiah
said to the
king, “Why
should this dead
dog curse my
lord the king?
Please let me go
over and take
off his head.”
10
The king said,
“What have I to
do with you, you
sons of Zeruiah?
Because he
curses, and
because Yahweh
has said to him,
‘Curse David;’
who then shall
say, ‘Why have
you done so?’”
11
David said to
Abishai, and to
all his
servants,
“Behold, my son,
who came forth
from my bowels,
seeks my life.
How much more
this Benjamite,
now? Leave him
alone, and let
him curse; for
Yahweh has
invited him.
12
It may be that
Yahweh will look
on the wrong
done to me, and
that Yahweh will
repay me good
for the cursing
of me today.”
13
So David and his
men went by the
way; and Shimei
went along on
the hillside
opposite him,
and cursed as he
went, threw
stones at him,
and threw dust.
14
The king, and
all the people
who were with
him, came weary;
and he refreshed
himself there.

110. Absalom in
Jerusalem.
(1) His Entrance
into the City. |
2 Samuel 15:37b.
37b
...and Absalom
came into
Jerusalem.
|
2 Samuel 16:15.
15
Absalom, and all
the people, the
men of Israel,
came to
Jerusalem, and
Ahithophel with
him. |
|
|
(2)
Hushai meets
Absalom.
2 Samuel
16:16-19.
16
It happened,
when Hushai the
Archite, David’s
friend, had come
to Absalom, that
Hushai said to
Absalom, “Long
live the king!
Long live the
king!”
17
Absalom said to
Hushai, “Is this
your kindness to
your friend? Why
didn’t you go
with your
friend?”
18
Hushai said to
Absalom, “No;
but whomever
Yahweh, and this
people, and all
the men of
Israel have
chosen, his will
I be, and with
him I will stay.
19
Again, whom
should I serve?
Shouldn’t I
serve in the
presence of his
son? As I have
served in your
father’s
presence, so
will I be in
your presence.”
|
|
|
(3) The
Counsels of
Ahithophel.
2 Samuel
16:20-17:4.
20
Then Absalom
said to
Ahithophel,
“Give your
counsel what we
shall do.”
21
Ahithophel said
to Absalom, “Go
in to your
father’s
concubines, that
he has left to
keep the house.
Then all Israel
will hear that
you are abhorred
by your father.
Then the hands
of all who are
with you will be
strong.”
22
So they spread
Absalom a tent
on the top of
the house; and
Absalom went in
to his father’s
concubines in
the sight of all
Israel.
23
The counsel of
Ahithophel,
which he gave in
those days, was
as if a man
inquired at the
oracle of God:
so was all the
counsel of
Ahithophel both
with David and
with Absalom.
1
Moreover
Ahithophel said
to Absalom, “Let
me now choose
twelve thousand
men, and I will
arise and pursue
after David
tonight.
2
I will come on
him while he is
weary and
exhausted, and
will make him
afraid. All the
people who are
with him shall
flee. I will
strike the king
only;
3
and I will bring
back all the
people to you.
The man whom you
seek is as if
all returned.
All the people
shall be in
peace.”
4
The saying
pleased Absalom
well, and all
the elders of
Israel.
|
|
|
(4)
Ahithophel's
Counsel is
thwarted by
Hushai.
2 Samuel
17:5-14.
5
Then Absalom
said, “Now call
Hushai the
Archite also,
and let us hear
likewise what he
says.”
6
When Hushai had
come to Absalom,
Absalom spoke to
him, saying,
“Ahithophel has
spoken like
this. Shall we
do what he says?
If not, speak
up.”
7
Hushai said to
Absalom, “The
counsel that
Ahithophel has
given this time
is not good.”
8
Hushai said
moreover, “You
know your father
and his men,
that they are
mighty men, and
they are fierce
in their minds,
like a bear
robbed of her
cubs in the
field. Your
father is a man
of war, and will
not lodge with
the people.
9
Behold, he is
now hidden in
some pit, or in
some other
place. It will
happen, when
some of them
have fallen at
the first, that
whoever hears it
will say, ‘There
is a slaughter
among the people
who follow
Absalom!’
10
Even he who is
valiant, whose
heart is as the
heart of a lion,
will utterly
melt; for all
Israel knows
that your father
is a mighty man,
and those who
are with him are
valiant men.
11
But I counsel
that all Israel
be gathered
together to you,
from Dan even to
Beersheba, as
the sand that is
by the sea for
multitude; and
that you go to
battle in your
own person.
12
So shall we come
on him in some
place where he
shall be found,
and we will
light on him as
the dew falls on
the ground; and
of him and of
all the men who
are with him we
will not leave
so much as one.
13
Moreover, if he
be gone into a
city, then shall
all Israel bring
ropes to that
city, and we
will draw it
into the river,
until there
isn’t one small
stone found
there.”
14
Absalom and all
the men of
Israel said,
“The counsel of
Hushai the
Archite is
better than the
counsel of
Ahithophel.” For
Yahweh had
ordained to
defeat the good
counsel of
Ahithophel, to
the intent that
Yahweh might
bring evil on
Absalom.

(5)
Hushai's Message
to David.
2 Samuel
17:15-22.
15
Then Hushai said
to Zadok and to
Abiathar the
priests,
“Ahithophel
counseled
Absalom and the
elders of Israel
that way; and I
have counseled
this way.
16
Now therefore
send quickly,
and tell David,
saying, ‘Don’t
lodge this night
at the fords of
the wilderness,
but by all means
pass over; lest
the king be
swallowed up,
and all the
people who are
with him.’”
17
Now Jonathan and
Ahimaaz were
staying by En
Rogel; and a
female servant
used to go and
tell them; and
they went and
told king David.
For they might
not be seen to
come into the
city.
18
But a boy saw
them, and told
Absalom. Then
they both went
away quickly,
and came to the
house of a man
in Bahurim, who
had a well in
his court; and
they went down
there.
19
The woman took
and spread the
covering over
the well’s
mouth, and
spread out
bruised grain on
it; and nothing
was known.
20
Absalom’s
servants came to
the woman to the
house; and they
said, “Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?”
The woman said
to them, “They
have gone over
the brook of
water.”
When they had
sought and could
not find them,
they returned to
Jerusalem.
21
It happened,
after they had
departed, that
they came up out
of the well, and
went and told
king David; and
they said to
David, “Arise
and pass quickly
over the water;
for thus has
Ahithophel
counseled
against you.”
22
Then David
arose, and all
the people who
were with him,
and they passed
over the Jordan.
By the morning
light there
lacked not one
of them who had
not gone over
the Jordan.

(6)
Ahithophel's
Suicide.
2 Samuel
17:23.
23
When Ahithophel
saw that his
counsel was not
followed, he
saddled his
donkey, and
arose, and went
home, to his
city, and set
his house in
order, and
hanged himself;
and he died, and
was buried in
the tomb of his
father. |

111. The Civil
War.
(1) Absalom's
Pursuit
2 Samuel
17:24-26.
24
Then David came
to Mahanaim.
Absalom passed
over the Jordan,
he and all the
men of Israel
with him.
25
Absalom set
Amasa over the
army instead of
Joab. Now Amasa
was the son of a
man, whose name
was Ithra the
Israelite, who
went in to
Abigail the
daughter of
Nahash, sister
to Zeruiah,
Joab’s mother.
26
Israel and
Absalom encamped
in the land of
Gilead. |
|
|
(2) The
Reception of
David at
Mahanaim.
2 Samuel
17:27-29.
27
It happened,
when David had
come to Mahanaim,
that Shobi the
son of Nahash of
Rabbah of the
children of
Ammon, and
Machir the son
of Ammiel of
Lodebar, and
Barzillai the
Gileadite of
Rogelim,
28
brought beds,
basins, earthen
vessels, wheat,
barley, meal,
parched grain,
beans, lentils,
roasted grain,
29
honey, butter,
sheep, and
cheese of the
herd, for David,
and for the
people who were
with him, to
eat: for they
said, “The
people are
hungry, and
weary, and
thirsty, in the
wilderness.”
|
|
|
(3) The
Battle of Mount
Ephraim.
2 Samuel
18:1-8.
1
David numbered
the people who
were with him,
and set captains
of thousands and
captains of
hundreds over
them.
2
David sent forth
the people, a
third part under
the hand of Joab,
and a third part
under the hand
of Abishai the
son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother,
and a third part
under the hand
of Ittai the
Gittite. The
king said to the
people, “I will
surely go forth
with you myself
also.”
3
But the people
said, “You shall
not go forth;
for if we flee
away, they will
not care for us;
neither if half
of us die, will
they care for
us. But you are
worth ten
thousand of us.
Therefore now it
is better that
you are ready to
help us out of
the city.”
4
The king said to
them, “I will do
what seems best
to you.”
The king stood
beside the gate,
and all the
people went out
by hundreds and
by thousands.
5
The king
commanded Joab
and Abishai and
Ittai, saying,
“Deal gently for
my sake with the
young man, even
with Absalom.”
All the people
heard when the
king commanded
all the captains
concerning
Absalom.
6
So the people
went out into
the field
against Israel:
and the battle
was in the
forest of
Ephraim.
7
The people of
Israel were
struck there
before the
servants of
David, and there
was a great
slaughter there
that day of
twenty thousand
men.
8
For the battle
was there spread
over the surface
of all the
country; and the
forest devoured
more people that
day than the
sword devoured. |
|
|
(4) Absalom
is murdered by
Joab.
2 Samuel
18:9-18.
9
Absalom happened
to meet the
servants of
David. Absalom
was riding on
his mule, and
the mule went
under the thick
boughs of a
great oak, and
his head caught
hold of the oak,
and he was taken
up between the
sky and earth;
and the mule
that was under
him went on.
10
A certain man
saw it, and told
Joab, and said,
“Behold, I saw
Absalom hanging
in an oak.”
11
Joab said to the
man who told
him, “Behold,
you saw it, and
why didn’t you
strike him there
to the ground? I
would have given
you ten pieces
of silver, and a
sash.”
12
The man said to
Joab, “Though I
should receive a
thousand pieces
of silver in my
hand, I still
wouldn’t put
forth my hand
against the
king’s son; for
in our hearing
the king
commanded you
and Abishai and
Ittai, saying,
‘Beware that
none touch the
young man
Absalom.’
13
Otherwise if I
had dealt
falsely against
his life (and
there is no
matter hidden
from the king),
then you
yourself would
have set
yourself against
me.”
14
Then Joab said,
“I’m not going
to wait like
this with you.”
He took three
darts in his
hand, and thrust
them through the
heart of
Absalom, while
he was yet alive
in the midst of
the oak.
15
Ten young men
who bore Joab’s
armor surrounded
and struck
Absalom, and
killed him.
16
Joab blew the
trumpet, and the
people returned
from pursuing
after Israel;
for Joab held
back the people.
17
They took
Absalom, and
cast him into
the great pit in
the forest, and
raised over him
a very great
heap of stones.
Then all Israel
fled everyone to
his tent.
18
Now Absalom in
his lifetime had
taken and reared
up for himself
the pillar,
which is in the
king’s dale; for
he said, “I have
no son to keep
my name in
memory.” He
called the
pillar after his
own name; and it
is called
Absalom’s
monument, to
this day. |

|
(5) The
Tidings brought
to David:his
Grief for
Absalom.
2 Samuel
18:19-33.
19
Then Ahimaaz the
son of Zadok
said, “Let me
now run, and
bear the king
news, how that
Yahweh has
avenged him of
his enemies.”
20
Joab said to
him, “You shall
not be the
bearer of news
this day, but
you shall bear
news another
day. But today
you shall bear
no news, because
the king’s son
is dead.”
21
Then Joab said
to the Cushite,
“Go, tell the
king what you
have seen!” The
Cushite bowed
himself to Joab,
and ran.
22
Then Ahimaaz the
son of Zadok
said yet again
to Joab, “But
come what may,
please let me
also run after
the Cushite.”
Joab said, “Why
do you want to
run, my son,
since that you
will have no
reward for the
news?”
23
“But come what
may,” he said,
“I will run.”
He said to him,
“Run!” Then
Ahimaaz ran by
the way of the
Plain, and
outran the
Cushite.
24
Now David was
sitting between
the two gates:
and the watchman
went up to the
roof of the gate
to the wall, and
lifted up his
eyes, and
looked, and,
behold, a man
running alone.
25
The watchman
cried, and told
the king. The
king said, “If
he is alone,
there is news in
his mouth.” He
came closer and
closer.
26
The watchman saw
another man
running; and the
watchman called
to the porter,
and said,
“Behold, a man
running alone!”
The king said,
“He also brings
news.”
27
The watchman
said, “I think
the running of
the first one is
like the running
of Ahimaaz the
son of Zadok.”
The king said,
“He is a good
man, and comes
with good news.”
28
Ahimaaz called,
and said to the
king, “All is
well.” He bowed
himself before
the king with
his face to the
earth, and said,
“Blessed is
Yahweh your God,
who has
delivered up the
men who lifted
up their hand
against my lord
the king!”
29
The king said,
“Is it well with
the young man
Absalom?”
Ahimaaz
answered, “When
Joab sent the
king’s servant,
even me your
servant, I saw a
great tumult,
but I don’t know
what it was.”
30
The king said,
“Turn aside, and
stand here.” He
turned aside,
and stood still.
31
Behold, the
Cushite came.
The Cushite
said, “News for
my lord the
king; for Yahweh
has avenged you
this day of all
those who rose
up against you.”
32
The king said to
the Cushite, “Is
it well with the
young man
Absalom?”
The Cushite
answered, “May
the enemies of
my lord the
king, and all
who rise up
against you to
do you harm, be
as that young
man is.”
33
The king was
much moved, and
went up to the
room over the
gate, and wept.
As he went, he
said, “My son
Absalom! My son,
my son Absalom!
I wish I had
died for you,
Absalom, my son,
my son!”

112. Joab's
Reproval of
David's unworthy
Grief.
2 Samuel
19:1-8a.
1
It was told Joab,
“Behold, the
king weeps and
mourns for
Absalom.”
2
The victory that
day was turned
into mourning to
all the people;
for the people
heard it said
that day, “The
king grieves for
his son.”
3
The people
sneaked into the
city that day,
as people who
are ashamed
steal away when
they flee in
battle.
4
The king covered
his face, and
the king cried
with a loud
voice, “My son
Absalom,
Absalom, my son,
my son!”
5
Joab came into
the house to the
king, and said,
“You have shamed
this day the
faces of all
your servants,
who this day
have saved your
life, and the
lives of your
sons and of your
daughters, and
the lives of
your wives, and
the lives of
your concubines;
6
in that you love
those who hate
you, and hate
those who love
you. For you
have declared
this day, that
princes and
servants are
nothing to you.
For today I
perceive that if
Absalom had
lived, and all
we had died this
day, then it
would have
pleased you
well.
7
Now therefore
arise, go out,
and speak to
comfort your
servants; for I
swear by Yahweh,
if you don’t go
out, not a man
will stay with
you this night.
That would be
worse to you
than all the
evil that has
happened to you
from your youth
until now.”
8a
Then the king
arose, and sat
in the gate.
They told to all
the people,
saying, “Behold,
the king is
sitting in the
gate.” All the
people came
before the
king....

113.
Negotiations for
David's Recall.
2 Samuel
19:8b-14.
8b
...Now Israel
had fled every
man to his tent.
9
All the people
were at strife
throughout all
the tribes of
Israel, saying,
“The king
delivered us out
of the hand of
our enemies, and
he saved us out
of the hand of
the Philistines;
and now he has
fled out of the
land from
Absalom.
10
Absalom, whom we
anointed over
us, is dead in
battle. Now
therefore why
don’t you speak
a word of
bringing the
king back?”
11
King David sent
to Zadok and to
Abiathar the
priests, saying,
“Speak to the
elders of Judah,
saying, ‘Why are
you the last to
bring the king
back to his
house? Since the
speech of all
Israel has come
to the king, to
return him to
his house.
12
You are my
brothers, you
are my bone and
my flesh. Why
then are you the
last to bring
back the king?’
13
Say to Amasa,
‘Aren’t you my
bone and my
flesh? God do so
to me, and more
also, if you
aren’t captain
of the army
before me
continually in
the room of Joab.’”
14
He bowed the
heart of all the
men of Judah,
even as one man;
so that they
sent to the
king, saying,
“Return, you and
all your
servants.”
|

114. David's
Return.
(1) The
homeward March
begins.
2 Samuel
19:15.
15
So the king
returned, and
came to the
Jordan. Judah
came to Gilgal,
to go to meet
the king, to
bring the king
over the Jordan.
|
|
|
(2) Shimei is
pardoned.
2 Samuel
19:16-23.
16
Shimei the son
of Gera, the
Benjamite, who
was of Bahurim,
hurried and came
down with the
men of Judah to
meet king David.
17
There were a
thousand men of
Benjamin with
him, and Ziba
the servant of
the house of
Saul, and his
fifteen sons and
his twenty
servants with
him; and they
went through the
Jordan in the
presence of the
king.
18
A ferry boat
went to bring
over the king’s
household, and
to do what he
thought good.
Shimei the son
of Gera fell
down before the
king, when he
had come over
the Jordan.
19
He said to the
king, “Don’t let
my lord impute
iniquity to me,
nor remember
that which your
servant did
perversely the
day that my lord
the king went
out of
Jerusalem, that
the king should
take it to his
heart.
20
For your servant
knows that I
have sinned.
Therefore,
behold, I have
come this day
the first of all
the house of
Joseph to go
down to meet my
lord the king.”
21
But Abishai the
son of Zeruiah
answered, “Shall
Shimei not be
put to death for
this, because he
cursed Yahweh’s
anointed?”
22
David said,
“What have I to
do with you, you
sons of Zeruiah,
that you should
this day be
adversaries to
me? Shall there
any man be put
to death this
day in Israel?
For don’t I know
that I am this
day king over
Israel?”
23
The king said to
Shimei, “You
shall not die.”
The king swore
to him.

(3) The
Meeting with
Mephibosheth.
2 Samuel
19:24-30.
24
Mephibosheth the
son of Saul came
down to meet the
king; and he had
neither groomed
his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor
washed his
clothes, from
the day the king
departed until
the day he came
home in peace.
25
It happened,
when he had come
to Jerusalem to
meet the king,
that the king
said to him,
“Why didn’t you
go with me,
Mephibosheth?”
26
He answered, “My
lord, O king, my
servant deceived
me. For your
servant said, I
will saddle me a
donkey, that I
may ride
thereon, and go
with the king;
because your
servant is lame.
27
He has slandered
your servant to
my lord the
king; but my
lord the king is
as an angel of
God. Do
therefore what
is good in your
eyes.
28
For all my
father’s house
were but dead
men before my
lord the king;
yet you set your
servant among
those who ate at
your own table.
What right
therefore have I
yet that I
should cry any
more to the
king?”
29
The king said to
him, “Why do you
speak any more
of your matters?
I say, you and
Ziba divide the
land.”
30
Mephibosheth
said to the
king, “Yes, let
him take all,
because my lord
the king has
come in peace to
his own house.” |

(4)
Barzillai's
Farewell.
2 Samuel
19:31-40a.
31
Barzillai the
Gileadite came
down from
Rogelim; and he
went over the
Jordan with the
king, to conduct
him over the
Jordan.
32
Now Barzillai
was a very aged
man, even eighty
years old: and
he had provided
the king with
sustenance while
he lay at
Mahanaim; for he
was a very great
man.
33
The king said to
Barzillai, “Come
over with me,
and I will
sustain you with
me in
Jerusalem.”
34
Barzillai said
to the king,
“How many are
the days of the
years of my
life, that I
should go up
with the king to
Jerusalem?
35
I am this day
eighty years
old. Can I
discern between
good and bad?
Can your servant
taste what I eat
or what I drink?
Can I hear any
more the voice
of singing men
and singing
women? Why then
should your
servant be yet a
burden to my
lord the king?
36
Your servant
would but just
go over the
Jordan with the
king. Why should
the king repay
me with such a
reward?
37
Please let your
servant turn
back again, that
I may die in my
own city, by the
grave of my
father and my
mother. But
behold, your
servant Chimham;
let him go over
with my lord the
king; and do to
him what shall
seem good to
you.”
38
The king
answered,
“Chimham shall
go over with me,
and I will do to
him that which
shall seem good
to you. Whatever
you require of
me, that I will
do for you.”
39
All the people
went over the
Jordan, and the
king went over.
Then the king
kissed Barzillai,
and blessed him;
and he returned
to his own
place.
40a
So the king went
over to Gilgal,
and Chimham went
over with him.... |

(5) The
Strife between
Judah and
Israel.
2 Samuel
19:40b-43.
40b
...All the
people of Judah
brought the king
over, and also
half the people
of Israel.
41
Behold, all the
men of Israel
came to the
king, and said
to the king,
“Why have our
brothers the men
of Judah stolen
you away, and
brought the
king, and his
household, over
the Jordan, and
all David’s men
with him?”
42
All the men of
Judah answered
the men of
Israel, “Because
the king is a
close relative
to us. Why then
are you angry
about this
matter? Have we
eaten at all at
the king’s cost?
Or has he given
us any gift?”
43
The men of
Israel answered
the men of
Judah, and said,
“We have ten
parts in the
king, and we
have also more
claim to David
than you. Why
then did you
despise us, that
our advice
should not be
first had in
bringing back
our king?” The
words of the men
of Judah were
fiercer than the
words of the men
of Israel.

115. Sheba's
Insurrection.
(1) The Outbreak
of the Revolt.
2 Samuel
20:1, 2.
1
There happened
to be there a
base fellow,
whose name was
Sheba, the son
of Bichri, a
Benjamite: and
he blew the
trumpet, and
said, “We have
no portion in
David, neither
have we
inheritance in
the son of
Jesse. Every man
to his tents,
Israel!”
2
So all the men
of Israel went
up from
following David,
and followed
Sheba the son of
Bichri; but the
men of Judah
joined with
their king, from
the Jordan even
to Jerusalem.
|
|
|
(2)
David re-enters
Jerusalem.
2 Samuel
20:3.
3
David came to
his house at
Jerusalem; and
the king took
the ten women
his concubines,
whom he had left
to keep the
house, and put
them in custody,
and provided
them with
sustenance, but
didn’t go in to
them. So they
were shut up to
the day of their
death, living in
widowhood.

(3) Joab,
after murdering
Amasa, pursues
Sheba.
2 Samuel
20:4-14.
4
Then the king
said to Amasa,
“Call me the men
of Judah
together within
three days, and
be here
present.”
5
So Amasa went to
call the men of
Judah together;
but he stayed
longer than the
set time which
he had appointed
him.
6
David said to
Abishai, “Now
Sheba the son of
Bichri will do
us more harm
than Absalom
did. Take your
lord’s servants,
and pursue after
him, lest he get
himself
fortified
cities, and
escape out of
our sight.”
7
There went out
after him Joab’s
men, and the
Cherethites and
the Pelethites,
and all the
mighty men; and
they went out of
Jerusalem, to
pursue after
Sheba the son of
Bichri.
8
When they were
at the great
stone which is
in Gibeon, Amasa
came to meet
them. Joab was
clothed in his
apparel of war
that he had put
on, and on it
was a sash with
a sword fastened
on his waist in
its sheath; and
as he went forth
it fell out.
9
Joab said to
Amasa, “Is it
well with you,
my brother?”
Joab took Amasa
by the beard
with his right
hand to kiss
him.
10
But Amasa took
no heed to the
sword that was
in Joab’s hand.
So he struck him
with it in the
body, and shed
out his bowels
to the ground,
and didn’t
strike him
again; and he
died. Joab and
Abishai his
brother pursued
after Sheba the
son of Bichri.
11
There stood by
him one of
Joab’s young
men, and said,
“He who favors
Joab, and he who
is for David,
let him follow
Joab!”
12
Amasa lay
wallowing in his
blood in the
midst of the
highway. When
the man saw that
all the people
stood still, he
carried Amasa
out of the
highway into the
field, and cast
a garment over
him, when he saw
that everyone
who came by him
stood still.
13
When he was
removed out of
the highway, all
the people went
on after Joab,
to pursue after
Sheba the son of
Bichri.
14
He went through
all the tribes
of Israel to
Abel, and to
Beth Maacah, and
all the Berites:
and they were
gathered
together, and
went also after
him.
|
|
|
(4) Siege of
Abel of Beth-maacah,
Death of Sheba,
and End of the
Rebellion.
2 Samuel
20:15-22.
15
They came and
besieged him in
Abel of Beth
Maacah, and they
cast up a mound
against the
city, and it
stood against
the rampart; and
all the people
who were with
Joab battered
the wall, to
throw it down.
16
Then a wise
woman cried out
of the city,
“Hear, hear!
Please say to
Joab, ‘Come near
here, that I may
speak with
you.’”
17
He came near to
her; and the
woman said, “Are
you Joab?”
He answered, “I
am.”
Then she said to
him, “Hear the
words of your
handmaid.”
He answered, “I
do hear.”
18
Then she spoke,
saying, “They
were used to say
in old times,
‘They shall
surely ask
counsel at
Abel;’ and so
they settled it.
19
I am among those
who are
peaceable and
faithful in
Israel. You seek
to destroy a
city and a
mother in
Israel. Why will
you swallow up
the inheritance
of Yahweh?”
20
Joab answered,
“Far be it, far
be it from me,
that I should
swallow up or
destroy.
21
The matter is
not so. But a
man of the hill
country of
Ephraim, Sheba
the son of
Bichri by name,
has lifted up
his hand against
the king, even
against David.
Deliver him
only, and I will
depart from the
city.”
The woman said
to Joab,
“Behold, his
head shall be
thrown to you
over the wall.”
22
Then the woman
went to all the
people in her
wisdom. They cut
off the head of
Sheba the son of
Bichri, and
threw it out to
Joab. He blew
the trumpet, and
they were
dispersed from
the city, every
man to his tent.
Joab returned to
Jerusalem to the
king. |

116. The
Officers of
State after the
Restoration.
2 Samuel
20:23-26.
15
They came and
besieged him in
Abel of Beth
Maacah, and they
cast up a mound
against the
city, and it
stood against

Joab returned to
Jerusalem to the
king.

117. David's
failing
Health:Abishag
the Shunammite.
1 Kings
1:1-4.
1
Now king David
was old and
stricken in
years; and they
covered him with
clothes, but he
couldn’t keep
warm.
2
Therefore his
servants said to
him, “Let there
be sought for my
lord the king a
young virgin.
Let her stand
before the king,
and cherish him;
and let her lie
in your bosom,
that my lord the
king may keep
warm.”
3
So they sought
for a beautiful
young lady
throughout all
the borders of
Israel, and
found Abishag
the Shunammite,
and brought her
to the king.
4
The young lady
was very
beautiful; and
she cherished
the king, and
ministered to
him; but the
king didn’t know
her intimately. |

118. Solomon is
made King " the
second Time."
(1) Adonijah
attempts to
seize the
Kingdom.
1 Kings
1:5-10.
5
Then Adonijah
the son of
Haggith exalted
himself, saying,
“I will be
king.” Then he
prepared him
chariots and
horsemen, and
fifty men to run
before him.
6
His father had
not displeased
him at any time
in saying, “Why
have you done
so?” and he was
also a very
handsome man;
and he was born
after Absalom.
7
He conferred
with Joab the
son of Zeruiah,
and with
Abiathar the
priest: and they
following
Adonijah helped
him.
8
But Zadok the
priest, and
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada, and
Nathan the
prophet, and
Shimei, and Rei,
and the mighty
men who belonged
to David, were
not with
Adonijah.
9
Adonijah killed
sheep and cattle
and fatlings by
the stone of
Zoheleth, which
is beside En
Rogel; and he
called all his
brothers, the
king’s sons, and
all the men of
Judah, the
king’s servants:
10
but Nathan the
prophet, and
Benaiah, and the
mighty men, and
Solomon his
brother, he
didn’t call. |

(2)
Nathan and Bath-sheba's
counter Coup d'
état.
1 Kings
1:11-37.
11
Then Nathan
spoke to
Bathsheba the
mother of
Solomon, saying,
“Haven’t you
heard that
Adonijah the son
of Haggith
reigns, and
David our lord
doesn’t know it?
12
Now therefore
come, please let
me give you
counsel, that
you may save
your own life,
and the life of
your son
Solomon.
13
Go in to king
David, and tell
him, ‘Didn’t
you, my lord,
king, swear to
your handmaid,
saying,
Assuredly
Solomon your son
shall reign
after me, and he
shall sit on my
throne? Why then
does Adonijah
reign?’
14
Behold, while
you yet talk
there with the
king, I also
will come in
after you, and
confirm your
words.”
15
Bathsheba went
in to the king
into the room.
The king was
very old; and
Abishag the
Shunammite was
ministering to
the king.
16
Bathsheba bowed,
and showed
respect to the
king. The king
said, “What
would you like?”
17
She said to him,
“My lord, you
swore by Yahweh1
your God2
to your
handmaid,
‘Assuredly
Solomon your son
shall reign
after me, and he
shall sit on my
throne.’
18
Now, behold,
Adonijah reigns;
and you, my lord
the king, don’t
know it.
19
He has slain
cattle and
fatlings and
sheep in
abundance, and
has called all
the sons of the
king, and
Abiathar the
priest, and Joab
the captain of
the army; but he
hasn’t called
Solomon your
servant.
20
You, my lord the
king, the eyes
of all Israel
are on you, that
you should tell
them who shall
sit on the
throne of my
lord the king
after him.
21
Otherwise it
will happen,
when my lord the
king shall sleep
with his
fathers, that I
and my son
Solomon shall be
counted
offenders.”
22
Behold, while
she yet talked
with the king,
Nathan the
prophet came in.
23
They told the
king, saying,
“Behold, Nathan
the prophet!”
When he had come
in before the
king, he bowed
himself before
the king with
his face to the
ground.
24
Nathan said, “My
lord, king, have
you said,
‘Adonijah shall
reign after me,
and he shall sit
on my throne?’
25
For he is gone
down this day,
and has slain
cattle and
fatlings and
sheep in
abundance, and
has called all
the king’s sons,
and the captains
of the army, and
Abiathar the
priest. Behold,
they are eating
and drinking
before him, and
say, ‘Long live
king Adonijah!’
26
But he hasn’t
called me, even
me your servant,
and Zadok the
priest, and
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada, and
your servant
Solomon.
27
Is this thing
done by my lord
the king, and
you haven’t
shown to your
servants who
should sit on
the throne of my
lord the king
after him?”
28
Then king David
answered, “Call
to me
Bathsheba.” She
came into the
king’s presence,
and stood before
the king.
29
The king swore,
and said, “As
Yahweh lives,
who has redeemed
my soul out of
all adversity,
30
most certainly
as I swore to
you by Yahweh,
the God of
Israel, saying,
‘Assuredly
Solomon your son
shall reign
after me, and he
shall sit on my
throne in my
place;’ most
certainly so
will I do this
day.”
31
Then Bathsheba
bowed with her
face to the
earth, and
showed respect
to the king, and
said, “Let my
lord king David
live forever!”
32
King David said,
“Call to me
Zadok the
priest, Nathan
the prophet, and
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada.”
They came before
the king.
33
The king said to
them, “Take with
you the servants
of your lord,
and cause
Solomon my son
to ride on my
own mule, and
bring him down
to Gihon.
34
Let Zadok the
priest and
Nathan the
prophet anoint
him there king
over Israel.
Blow the
trumpet, and
say, ‘Long live
king Solomon!’
35
Then you shall
come up after
him, and he
shall come and
sit on my
throne; for he
shall be king in
my place. I have
appointed him to
be prince over
Israel and over
Judah.”
36
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada
answered the
king, and said,
“Amen. May
Yahweh, the God
of my lord the
king, say so.
37
As Yahweh has
been with my
lord the king,
even so may he
be with Solomon,
and make his
throne greater
than the throne
of my lord king
David.” |

(3) Solomon's
second
Anointing. |
1 Kings 1:38-40.
38
So Zadok the
priest, and
Nathan the
prophet, and
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada, and
the Cherethites
and the
Pelethites, went
down, and caused
Solomon to ride
on king David’s
mule, and
brought him to
Gihon.
39
Zadok the priest
took the horn of
oil out of the
Tent, and
anointed
Solomon. They
blew the
trumpet; and all
the people said,
“Long live king
Solomon!”

All the people
came up after
him, and the
people piped
with pipes, and
rejoiced with
great joy, so
that the earth
shook with their
sound. |

29:22b.

Solomon the son
of David king
the second time,
and anointed him
to Yahweh to be
prince, and
Zadok to be
priest. |

Adonijah's Alarm
and Submission.
1 Kings
1:41-53.
41
Adonijah and all
the guests who
were with him
heard it as they
had made an end
of eating. When
Joab heard the
sound of the
trumpet, he
said, “Why is
this noise of
the city being
in an uproar?”
42
While he yet
spoke, behold,
Jonathan the son
of Abiathar the
priest came: and
Adonijah said,
“Come in; for
you are a worthy
man, and bring
good news.”
43
Jonathan
answered
Adonijah, “Most
certainly our
lord king David
has made Solomon
king.
44
The king has
sent with him
Zadok the
priest, Nathan
the prophet,
Benaiah the son
of Jehoiada, and
the Cherethites
and the
Pelethites; and
they have caused
him to ride on
the king’s mule.
45
Zadok the priest
and Nathan the
prophet have
anointed him
king in Gihon.
They have come
up from there
rejoicing, so
that the city
rang again. This
is the noise
that you have
heard.
46
Also, Solomon
sits on the
throne of the
kingdom.
47
Moreover the
king’s servants
came to bless
our lord king
David, saying,
‘May your God
make the name of
Solomon better
than your name,
and make his
throne greater
than your
throne;’ and the
king bowed
himself on the
bed.
48
Also thus said
the king,
‘Blessed be
Yahweh, the God
of Israel, who
has given one to
sit on my throne
this day, my
eyes even seeing
it.’”
49
All the guests
of Adonijah were
afraid, and rose
up, and each man
went his way.
50
Adonijah feared
because of
Solomon; and he
arose, and went,
and caught hold
on the horns of
the altar.
51
It was told
Solomon, saying,
“Behold,
Adonijah fears
king Solomon;
for, behold, he
has laid hold on
the horns of the
altar, saying,
‘Let king
Solomon swear to
me first that he
will not kill
his servant with
the sword.’”
52
Solomon said,
“If he shows
himself a worthy
man, not a hair
of him shall
fall to the
earth; but if
wickedness be
found in him, he
shall die.”
53
So king Solomon
sent, and they
brought him down
from the altar.
He came and
bowed down to
king Solomon;
and Solomon said
to him, “Go to
your house.”

119. David's
last prophetic
Words.
2 Samuel
23:1-7.
1
Now these are
the last words
of David.
David the son of
Jesse says,
the man who was
raised on high
says,
the anointed of
the God of
Jacob,
the sweet
psalmist of
Israel:
2
“The Spirit of
Yahweh spoke by
me.
His word was on
my tongue.
3
The God of
Israel said,
the Rock of
Israel spoke to
me,
‘One who rules
over men
righteously,
who rules in the
fear of God,
4
shall be as the
light of the
morning, when
the sun rises,
a morning
without clouds,
when the tender
grass springs
out of the
earth,
through clear
shining after
rain.’
5
Most certainly
my house is not
so with God,
yet he has made
with me an
everlasting
covenant,
ordered in all
things, and
sure,
for it is all my
salvation, and
all my desire,
although he
doesn’t make it
grow.
6
But all of the
ungodly shall be
as thorns to be
thrust away,
because they
can’t be taken
with the hand,
7
But the man who
touches them
must be armed
with iron and
the staff of a
spear.
They shall be
utterly burned
with fire in
their place.”

120. David's
last Words to
Solomon.
1 Kings
2:1-9.
1
Now the days of
David drew near
that he should
die; and he
commanded
Solomon his son,
saying,
2
“I am going the
way of all the
earth. You be
strong
therefore, and
show yourself a
man;
3
and keep the
instruction of
Yahweh your God,
to walk in his
ways, to keep
his statutes,
his
commandments,
his ordinances,
and his
testimonies,
according to
that which is
written in the
law of Moses,
that you may
prosper in all
that you do, and
wherever you
turn yourself.
4
That Yahweh may
establish his
word which he
spoke concerning
me, saying, ‘If
your children
take heed to
their way, to
walk before me
in truth with
all their heart
and with all
their soul,
there shall not
fail you,’ he
said, ‘a man on
the throne of
Israel.’
5
“Moreover you
know also what
Joab the son of
Zeruiah did to
me, even what he
did to the two
captains of the
armies of
Israel, to Abner
the son of Ner,
and to Amasa the
son of Jether,
whom he killed,
and shed the
blood of war in
peace, and put
the blood of war
on his sash that
was about his
waist, and in
his shoes that
were on his
feet.
6
Do therefore
according to
your wisdom, and
don’t let his
gray head go
down to Sheol1
in peace.
7
But show
kindness to the
sons of
Barzillai the
Gileadite, and
let them be of
those who eat at
your table; for
so they came to
me when I fled
from Absalom
your brother.
8
“Behold, there
is with you
Shimei the son
of Gera, the
Benjamite, of
Bahurim, who
cursed me with a
grievous curse
in the day when
I went to
Mahanaim; but he
came down to
meet me at the
Jordan, and I
swore to him by
Yahweh, saying,
‘I will not put
you to death
with the sword.’
9
Now therefore
don’t hold him
guiltless, for
you are a wise
man; and you
will know what
you ought to do
to him, and you
shall bring his
gray head down
to Sheol2
with blood.”

121. The Death
of David. |
2 Samuel 5:4, 5.
4
David was thirty
years old when
he began to
reign, and he
reigned forty
years.
5
In Hebron he
reigned over
Judah seven
years and six
months; and in
Jerusalem he
reigned
thirty-three
years over all
Israel and
Judah. |
1 Kings 2:11,
10.
11
The days that
David reigned
over Israel were
forty years; he
reigned seven
years in Hebron,
and he reigned
thirty-three
years in
Jerusalem.
12
Solomon sat on
the throne of
David his
father; and his
kingdom was
firmly
established.
|
1 Chronicles
3:4b.
4b
...and there
[Hebron] he
reigned seven
years and six
months. In
Jerusalem he
reigned
thirty-three
years;
|
1 Chronicles
29:26-30.
26
Now David the
son of Jesse
reigned over all
Israel.
27
The time that he
reigned over
Israel was forty
years; he
reigned seven
years in Hebron,
and he reigned
thirty-three
years in
Jerusalem.
28
He died in a
good old age,
full of days,
riches, and
honor: and
Solomon his son
reigned in his
place.
29
Now the acts of
David the king,
first and last,
behold, they are
written in the
history of
Samuel the seer,
and in the
history of
Nathan the
prophet, and in
the history of
Gad the seer,
30
with all his
reign and his
might, and the
times that went
over him, and
over Israel, and
over all the
kingdoms of the
countries.
