THE LAST WORDS OF JESUS
This grouping includes the last words of Jesus, as spoken from the
Passover until His Ascension 121 x 71. They do not include the words
of Jesus as recorded in John 11-17 (11 x 7) which appear in Chapter
vi |
I. Preparation for the Passover
1. COMMANDS DISCIPLES TO PREPARE THE PASSOVER
Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. Luke 22:8.
2. TO GO INTO CITY, MEET A MAN WITH PITCHER OF WATER AND FOLLOW HIM
Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet
you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he
entereth in. Luke 22:10.
3. TO REQUEST THE MAN THE USE OF THE GUESTCHAMBER
And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith
unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover
with my disciples? Luke 22:11.
4. TELL THE MAN THE MASTER WILL KEEP THE PASSOVER
Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith,
My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my
disciples. Matthew 26:18.
5. THE MAN WILL SHOW YOU A LARGE ROOM FURNISHED
And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make
ready. Luke 22:12.
6. CHRIST DECLARES HE HAS DESIRED TO EAT THIS PASSOVER WITH HIS
DISCIPLES
With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I
suffer. Luke 22:15.
7. CHRIST WILL NOT EAT THEREOF AGAIN UNTIL FULFILLED IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD
For 1 say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be
fulfilled in the kingdom of God. Luke 22:16.

II. The Eating of the Passover
1. TELLS DISCIPLES TO EAT—THIS IS HIS BODY
Take, eat; this is my
body. Matthew 26:26.
2. HE INSTITUTES LORD'S SUPPER—TO BE OBSERVED IN REMEMBRANCE OF HIM
This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of
me. Luke 22:19.
3. IT WAS HIS BODY BROKEN FOR HIS DISCIPLES
Take, eat: this is my
body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. I
Corinthians 11:24.
4. THE CUP WAS THE NEW TESTAMENT IN HIS BLOOD SHED FOR HIS DISCIPLES
This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Luke 22:20.
5. DISCIPLES WERE TO DRINK ALL OF IT
Drink ye all of it. .Matthew
26.27.
6. IT WAS THE BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT SHED FOR THE REMISSION OF
THE SINS OF MANY
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is
shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28.
7. CHRIST WILL NOT DRINK AGAIN OF THE FRUIT OF THE VINE UNTIL HE
DRINKS IT IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD
But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of the fruit of the
vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's
kingdom. Matthew 26:29.

III. Christ's Words When He Washed the Disciples' Feet 1. DISCIPLES DID NOT UNDERSTAND PURPOSE THEN, BUT WOULD LATER
What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know here-after. John 13:7.
2. THOSE NOT WASHED HAVE NO PART WITH CHRIST
If I wash thee not. thou hast no part with me. John 13:8.
3. WASHING OF FEET SYMBOLIC OF WASHING OF ENTIRE BODY
He that is washed needeth not save to sash his feet, but is clean
every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. John 13:10.
4. AS THE MASTER DOES, SO SHALL THE DISCIPLES DO
Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye
say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed
your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. John 13:12-14.
5. CHRIST'S ACT WAS AN EXAMPLE TO DISCIPLES
For I have given you an
example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John 13:15.
6. SERVANT IS NOT GREATER THAN LORD
Verily, verily, I say unto you. The servant is not greater
than his lord; neither he that is servant greater than he that sent hint. John
13:16.
7. HE THAT KNOWETH CHRIST'S COMMANDMENTS, IS HAPPY IF HE DOES THEM
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John 13:17.

IV. Disciples to Be Humble, to Serve One Another, to Be Rewarded With Kingdom 1. DISCIPLES TO BE OFFENDED, SCATTERED: THE SHEPHERD SMITTEN
All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is
written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall
be scattered abroad. Matt. 26:31.
2. AFTER RESURRECTION CHRIST TO SEE DISCIPLES IN GALILEE
But after I ant risen main, I will go before you into Galilee. Matt.
26:32.
3. GENTILES EXERCISE AUTHORITY: BUT NOT SO AMONG YOU: GREATEST TO
SERVE
The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that
exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall
not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the
younger; and he that is chief, as he that loth serve. Luke 22:25-26.
4. CHRIST AN EXAMPLE AS ONE WHO SERVED
For whether is greater, he
that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth" is not he that sitteth at
meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Luke 22:27.
5. APOSTLES TO BE REMEMBERED FOR CONTINUING WITH CHRIST IN HIS
TEMPTATIONS
Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. Luke
22:28.
6. A KINGDOM IS APPOINTED THEM
And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as
my Father bath appointed unto me. Luke 22:29.
7. APOSTLES TO JUDGE 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL
That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on
thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Luke 22:30.

V. Words After the Supper—Group II (as recorded by Luke) 1. SATAN DESIRED TO HAVE PETER
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath
desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. Luke 22:31.
2. CHRIST FRAYED THAT PETER'S FAITH WOULD NOT FAIL
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not. Luke 22:32.
3. WHEN PETER WAS CONVERTED HE WAS TO STRENGTHEN BRETHREN
And when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Luke 22:32.
4. CHRIST ASKS DISCIPLES IF THEY HAD LACKED ANYTHING
When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any
thing? Luke 22:35.
5. NOW HE TELLS THEM TO TAKE PURSE AND SCRIP AND SWORD
But now, he that bath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his
scrip: and he that bath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy
one. Luke 22:36.
6. CHRIST TO BE NUMBERED AMONG TRANSGRESSORS; ALL THINGS WRITTEN TO
BE FULFILLED
For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be
accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for
the things concerning me have an end. Luke 22:37,
7. DISCIPLES FIND TWO SWORDS, AND THE LORD SAYS IT IS ENOUGH
It is

VI. Christ's Words After the Supper Group II—(as recorded by john) 1. CHRIST ANNOUNCES THE GLORIFICATION OF THE SON
Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. John
13:31.
2. GOD TO GLORIFY THE SON IN HIMSELF
If God be glorified in him, God
shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify
him. John 13:32.
3. CHRIST TELLS DISCIPLES HE WILL BE WITH THEM ONLY A LITTLE WHILE
LONGER
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me:
and as I said unto the .Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I
say to you. John 13:33.
4. HE GIVES A NEW COMMANDMENT THAT DISCIPLES LOVE ONE ANOTHER
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I
have loved you, that ye also love one another. John 13:34.
5. BY THIS LOVE SHALL THE WORLD KNOW THAT MEN ARE CHRIST'S DISCIPLES
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love
one to another. John 13:35.
6. PETER COULD NOT FOLLOW LORD NOW, BUT HE WOULD AFTERWARDS
Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me
afterwards. John 13:36.
7. PETER WAS TO DENY THE LORD THRICE
Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. John
13:38.

VII. Prayer for the Glorification of the Son 1. CHRIST ASKS THE FATHER TO GLORIFY THE SON, THAT HE MIGHT GLORIFY
THE FATHER
Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may
glorify thee. John 17:1.
2. THAT HE MIGHT GIVE ETERNAL LIFE TO AS MANY AS GIVEN HIM
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give
eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John 17:2.
3. IT IS LIFE ETERNAL TO KNOW THE ONLY TRUE GOD AND HIS SON
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true
God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3.
4. CHRIST TELLS THE FATHER HE HAS FINISHED THE WORK GIVEN HIM TO DO
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which
thou gayest me to do. John 17:4.
5. HE ASKS FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE GLORY HE HAD WITH THE FATHER
BEFORE THE WORLD WAS
And now, 0 Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the
glory which I had with thee before the world was. John 17:5.
6. CHRIST HAS MANIFESTED THE FATHER'S NAME TO HIS DISCIPLES
I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gayest me out of
the world: thine they were, and thou gayest them me; and they have
kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou
hast given me are of thee. John 17:6-7.
7. HE HAS GIVEN THEM THE FATHER'S WORDS AND THEY HAVE RECEIVED THEM
For I have given unto them the words which thou gayest me; and they
have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee,
and they have believed that thou didst send me. John 17:8.

VIII. Prayer for the Disciples That They Might Be Kept
1. CHRIST PRAYS FOR HIS DISCIPLES NOT THE WORLD
I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou
hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine
are mine; and I am glorified in them. John 17:9-10.
2. THAT THE FATHER MIGHT KEEP THEM THROUGH HIS NAME AND THEY MIGHT
BE ONE
And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I
come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom
thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. John 17:11.
3. I KEPT THEM WHILE IN THE WORLD AND NONE IS LOST BUT SON OF
PERDITION
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those
that thou gayest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the
son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. John 17:12.
4. THAT THE DISCIPLES MIGHT HAVE CHRIST'S JOY FUFILLED IN THEMSELVES
And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that
they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. John 17:13.
5. THAT THE DISCIPLES IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD MIGHT BE
KEPT FROM EVIL
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because
they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not
that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou
shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even
as I am not of the world. John 17:14-16.
6. THAT THEY MIGHT BE SANCTIFIED THROUGH THE TRUTH
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17.
7. AS THE FATHER SENT CHRIST SO SENDS HE THE DISCIPLES, AND FOR
THEIR SAKE HE SANCTIFIES HIMSELF
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them
into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they
also might be sanctified through the truth. John 17:18-19.

IX. Prays for All Who Believe on the Apostles' Word 1. CHRIST PRAYS FOR ALL WHO WILL BELIEVE
Neither pray I for these
alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their
word. John 17:20.
2. THAT ALL BELIEVERS MAY BE ONE—THAT THE WORLD MIGHT BELIEVE
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee,
that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that
thou hast sent me. John 17:21.
3. THE FATHER'S GLORY TO BE GIVEN TO ALL BELIEVERS
And the glory which thou gayest me I have given them; that they may
be one, even as we are one. John 17:22.
4. THAT ALL BELIEVERS MIGHT BE MADE PERFECT IN ONE
I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and
that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them,
as thou hast loved me. John 17:23.
5. THAT ALL BELIEVERS MAY BE WITH HIM AND BEHOLD HIS GLORY
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me
where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me:
for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. John 17:24.
6. THE WORLD HAS NOT KNOWN THE FATHER BUT CHRIST AND HIS DISCIPLES
HAVE KNOWN
O righteous Father, the world bath not known thee: but I have known
thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. John 17:25.
7. THAT THE LOVE OF THE FATHER MAY BE IN THE DISCIPLES, AND CHRIST IN THEM
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that
the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Sit ye here, while
I go and pray yonder. Matt. 26:36.

My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and
watch with me. Matt. 26:38.
3. ASKS THE FATHER THAT THE CUP PASS FROM HIM IF POSSIBLE
0 my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me:
nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matt. 26:39.

What, could ye not watch with me

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed

XI. Christ Predicts His Betrayal 1. CHRIST TO BE BETRAYED INTO THE HANDS OF MEN
The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men. Matt. 17:22.
2. HIS BETRAYAL TO RESULT IN HIS CRUCIFIXION
Ye know that after two
days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to
be crucified. Matt. 26:2.
3. BETRAYAL TO BE BY ONE OF THE DISCIPLES
Verily I say unto you,
that one of you shall betray me. Matt. 26:21.
4. BETRAYAL TO BE IN FULFILLMENT OF SCRIPTURE
I speak not of you
all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be
fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me bath lifted up his heel
against me. John 13:18.

Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given
me, shall I not drink it? John 18:11.

SEND TWELVE LEGIONS OF ANGELS, BUT HOW COULD SCRIPTURE BE FULFILLED
Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the
sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now
pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve
legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled,

synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in

Why asket thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16.16.
3. BELIEVERS TO CAST OUT DEVILS
And these signs shall follow them
that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils. Mark 16:17.
4. TO SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES
And these signs shall follow them that
believe. . . . They shall speak with new tongues. Mark 16:17.
5. TO TAKE UP SERPENTS
They shall take up serpents. Mark 16:18.
(Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and
over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

6. IF THEY DRINK ANY DEADLY THING IT SHALL NOT HURT THEM
And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. Mark
16:18.
